A road test entitled "Muddy Waters" printed in "Fast Lane" issue of April 1991 of a GES 300 v a Range Rover Vogue SE the G- wagen with basic UK extras alloys, side steps, sunroof, came in at £34.5k. This car was manual 5 speed. Extrapolate from that but expect it to be well over £40k by 1996.

Re: Original Retail Price

My UK spec 1994  300GEL was purchased when new by my father in law for the sum of £40,950.

He actually purchased two at the same time, the other one was a slightly better spec with air conditioning and the rear jump seats which cost £42,400.

As well as the two G Wagons he also bought a new V12 SL600 for his wife which cost £104,000 and received absolutely no discount from Mercedes on any of them.

I did a slightly better deal when I bought these two from him smiley

How do you find the running costs on the SL600. I have an SL60, and I must say other than the usual, it's cost me very little (a wee re-spray aside)

I think I have gone green!  Don't start on MB discounts though - in those days NO - in these days YES.  There is G63 ganz neue in MB Salisbury and they are already talking deals.  Wait until she has a few hundred miles on her; she will less than your SL600 when new.

Yes, no discounts in those days, although I did manage to squeeze a wee bit out of MB on a (nearly) fully loaded new 201 twenty odd years ago. But that was only because someone had baled out of the deal and the dealer (MB in fact) was stuck with the car.

Those were the days when every toy cost extra, and things like electric windows were considered to be toys! So was the radio! How things change, sadly however the biggest change has been the quality of MB's offerings across the board.

These days, they are just another high volume car maker pumping out boxes. Of course they still have a couple of decent products, at a price. For the rest, frankly Ford make more honest boxes, and the Japanese make better.

The SL600 has been gone for some time now, moved on to more recent models, but it was not expensive to run.

I averaged around 22mpg and apart from the soft top occasionally not wanting to shut it never caused me any problems. It came with a full MB service history so I decided to continue with that which made servicing costs more expensive than an independent. but it did make it very easy to sell.

The V12 is a beautifully smooth engine with plenty of power but delivered in a more refined way than a V8.  I think that the SL600 is often overlooked in favour of the more sporty SL60 but in many ways the V12 is better suited to the character of the R129.
