Hi, can anyone help in scourcing a 617a. My 300gd has suffered serious bottom end damage after an oil loss incident and i am not sure my marriage will survive a complete kitchen rebuild. Anyway at 3000,000 miles she has had a good innings. Was the factory turbo available in any european vehicles or am i looking at trying to ship from the states. Has anyone has any good contacts or any other advise that would be helpful. Alternatively is a bottom end rebuild possible without removing the engine from the vehicle. Any thoughts, cheers.

Re: om617a sourcing

Have a look on P3 and search for Huss55. He has sourced a 617a and also fitted a 606 (which to me looks to be a far better modification) plus it would appear that they are easier to get hold of in the UK.

I’ve only ever driven one 617a and I have to say I didn’t like the engine characteristics at all. Pretty unrefined, very narrow power band and actually not a lot of go. But then I’m not much of a fan of turbo diesels in an off roader anyway. Connecting it to an auto box helps though.

Are you aware of the clearance issues when changing engines in a RHD?

Re: om617a sourcing

Hi Richard
I have bought and shipped a number of 617A engines from USA..  never sourced a good one from Europe.and never never by proxy..by the time you have sourced the availability ..travelled to the USA to inspect and run the engine/s... arranged removal and packing...and arranged shipping and delivery to your home address the cost will be around USD 1500 per engine...before you start the retrofit....the retrofit is not quite "drop in" ...removal of the  automatic flywheel  and fitting your old flywheel for the manual gearbox clutch and related linkeages. emission control plumbing..changing / fabricating  the existing exhaust to suit the turbo (make sure the interface flange comes on the turbo)         surplus normally aspirated OM 617 engines are available as "known quatities" for as little as GBP 450/500.. (cost 3 times as much to overhauI)    if your own G' is a bit long in the tooth / frayed at the edges  this is a much cheaper way to go....

Re: om617a sourcing

Hi, thanks for your comments, just missed a 617 on ebay other night when i lost my connection in the final few minutes and some other lucky so and so picked it up for £310 with the range rover it had been fitted in, mind you with 12 previous owners and in a chopped up off roader it may have not proved the bargain it looked. I think a straight replacement is the way to go when i remember we used to drive down to spain at a constant 70mph in the G. It would seem  finding one that has been looked after and not covered half a million miles will be the issue. If anyone knows of the whereabouts of a good one i would be extremely grateful. Also any good tips for spotting a good one apart from nasty noises and blow past, both that mine has in abundence. Many thanks, Richard
