Re: Oil spec for gearbox and axles

Its not a straight answer (even if you had the Owners Manual) and its often asked and discussed here.

See:  http://www.gwoa.co.uk/content/2003-g270-463-motor-oil-spec

Or search "oil spec" for other, or similar.

Hopefully someone has a service manual which is where it will be.

Edit: from the above, Pistonhead referred the following:

.....recommendations by Mercedes is varied; these vary list from MB Oil Specs sheet 228.3, 228.5, 228.51, 229.3, 229.31,  229.5,  229.51 or 229.52.

See: Sheet 223.2 ....

Maintenance manuals refer to MB Service sheets for engine oils (because the recommended fluids can change), but you can find other details in the Members section and manuals.  like here:

Summary attached.

Re: Oil spec for gearbox and axles

Based on today's luvbricants:

  • Engine: Semi-synthetic Mobil 3000 Super (petrol) or Mobil Delvac 5W40 (diesel)
  • Auto transmission: Any Dexron II or Dexron II  transmission fluid, but I would use synthetic, here, sich as Fuchs Titan ATF 6000 SL
  • Transfer case:  Castrol Syntrans  FE 75 W
  • Hypoid differential: Castrol Syntrax 75W90
  • Brake fluid: DOT 4 Plus
  • Power Steering Fluid: same as for auto transmission
  • Coolant: G40 type, such as Coma X-stream G40 (with BASF Glysantin): 50;50 mix if concentrate
  • Differential Locks: DOT 4 Plus

Re: Oil spec for gearbox

I'm having a game getting sae 80 transmission oil for the transfer box..
The axles are sae 90, which isn't a problem, but I keep getting offered sae 80/90 which as the name suggests,  it covers both but I'm not sure how crucial the 80 is over 90.
There may be a modern alternative to the handbook,
But i wanted to get the right stuff.
Can you advise please?  It's a manual box on a 1993 300 GD
