I'm experiencing oil leaks from the transfer box seals, though not noticeable, nevertheless the dripping oil seems that is being picked up by the rotating shaft and is thrown on the exhaust pipe and the car ends up smelling like a badly smoked kipper., particularly after a fast run.
The local ( Leatherhead) gear box repairers say that I need to remove the transfer box in order to change the seals. Is this right?
I had recently changed the shaft seal to the rear differential without having to resolve to such an exercise.

Transfer box oil leaks

First are you sure you are not getting grease thrown from the ujs on the props.
Taking out the transfer box isn't too bad a job, arm aching undoing all the bolts on the props, make sure you mark the props and flanges before you take them off and put them back in exactly the same position. otherwise you will get the vibrations from hell.
Once out take the box to be professionaly rebuilt, that way you get a warranty.
Good luck

Thanks. Oil leak defenitely from the seals. Local gear box- differential shop: Hardy Engineering . They are located at Kingston Road Leatherhead, in case anybody is interested. Not a cheap place, but one can expect proper engineering there.
No problems, so far.
