Oil In Expansion Tank 300 AMG 1993
I have recently taken bought a SWB 300 AMG Auto1993. I have just noticed after a longer run yesterday that the expansion tank has oil in it. I have checked the engine oil and there is no milky residue on the dipstick or on the oil filler cap. The oil level for the engine does not seem to have dropped on the dipstick. I have stripped the expansion tank and drain the tank there was approximately a pint of oil in there. Since I have only had the G a week, I do not know how long this oil has been in the coolant. I have drained the radiator and there was mainly water with about 10% oil. The oil smells as used oil does so again no clue there. Any thoughts?
Maybe the oil cooler has failed. If it's the same as mine its integrated in to the radiator.
As Russ280 has mentioned there is a probability of either the engine oil cooler or gearbox oil cooler has failed. Having high pressures on the oil side it could only cross contaminate into the coolant hence on water in the engine oil.
Do check your gear oil level as well.
You will need to clean out the contamination - not easy; have the radiator test out for oil cooler leakage(s).
Be wary of how you clean out the radiator being environmental conscious; oil or oil contamination must not be drained into any drains! This carries over £2000 fine.
I think you have started in the right place by draining the system, you have not owned your G long, do not rule out some clown putting oil in the wrong filler .

Thanks will check this.
