I just bought my 300 GD 1987 and I am a bit concerned about the noise levels when reaching around 80-90 kmh. Is it normal to wear ear plugs because you are scared of becoming deaf? I have read that GWagen is remarkably quiet but I wouldn't sign it. As I have no previous experience I would like to hear some experience from other owners. Thanks!

Hi Tom, What kind of noise and where is it coming from as it sounds like your G has a problem. The only noise I get from my 300 GD is an oscilating vibration at 40 and 60 MPH but it is not severe and I really don't notice it now. The engine is very quiet from inside the cab. Let us know what kind of noise you are experiencing.

Thanks Chazz,
sorry for not describing the noise. I think there are two sources of noise: when the revs reach certain level, then engine becomes loud (whether the noise comes from the engine itself or transmission etc. I haven't checked yet). The other sources of noise is the rear tires: they start to "scream" when certain speed is reached. One curious thing is that the stick from which you select the 2W/4W drive heats up! (I have checked the fluid levels). There seems to be a lot of friction and definately the stick warms up.
My G has an automatic and it doesn't work properly when shifting from 3 to 4; it doesn't transmit the power smoothly and keeps changing between 3 and 4 until higher revs is reached and then it stays on 4. I am actually driving it like with a manual. Using position 3 and when reaching certain speed, I change the stick to 4 and then it seems to work fine.
I am anticipating that there is some work ahead;-)
/Tom

Hi Tom, The 2>4 stick on my G gets warm not hot and there is a fair amount of vibration when I put my hand on it but it is not noisy. As to the Tyres :?: need to pass on that. I know it is hard to identify where a noise is comming from but think you will need to do this first then hopefully someone on this forum will point you in the right direction. Good luck.
