Dear all,

Since a couple of days I'm hearing a strange "metallic rattling" sound coming from the left front side ( drivers side here in Europe) of my G.

The noise can be compared to some loose nuts in a metallic cup. You can hear it when going over road irregularities and small bumps and at higher speeds on even roads. Noise doesn't go away if I depress the clutch. 4X4 works just fine. No change in handlng.

I checked underneath and can't find anything loose.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Quinten

You haven't said what model your G is. But when ceramic catalytic converters fail, they sound just as you described.

IF you have a failed catalytic converter, you should not drive the car, as there is a danger of ceramic dust and small particles being sucked back into the engine, as the exhaust gasses resonate. (This danger is worse for newer engines where the catalytic converters are fitted very close to, or are part of, the exhaust manifold.)

if not the above it could be a cv joint or more likely a worn ball joint.

It's a 250 GD ( W460) of 1989.

If it's the left CV joint i would have problems in 4X4 and would hear it taking sharp turns whilst pushing the gas pedal, ni?

OK, then. No catalytic converter to worry about. Do you hear the noise only when the vehicle is moving or also when stationary, with the engine idling?

I think the catalytic converter is on the right hand side ???  The final exhaust silencer is on left side , Perhaps one should check the hangers?

Disregard this. I just reralized that the  car is a 460

Will try to record the sound tonight using my Gopro camera. The noise doesn't seem to influence the driving but its making me crazy. frown
