no headlights 1981 w460
Anyone got any pointers.
Both dipped headlights and main beams have stopped working on my G. The main beams will flash as per normal but otherwisw no lights, all sidelights are ok.
I did read they they are protected by multiple fuses so a fuse failure is unlikely. I've got the electrical schema but the old eyes struggle with it. It would seem to point to the multi way steering column switch?
not much help but i had a issue with the control stick some years ago
and was silly enough to go to MB for a new one
they sold me a salon car one all sorts of strange things happened
With the steering column contacts usually the headlights fail either on dip or high beam, not both. I would check out the Light switch and, or the socket block by the steering column near the ignition switch.
Hi
I would also check fuses to be sure especially the main light switch supply fuse
I doubt it will be wrong though as cars are wired so that you have at least some lights and they dont all fail to be safe
As pistonheads said check the switch as it supplies power from one wire to stalk for main or dipped
Check wire out from switch to stalk for power

Normally the fuses .. under dash itself on driver's side up against the A pillar.
If you have had leaky windscreens then water collects in the fuse cover.. they corrode gently (electrolysis).. and all goes bad! (BTDT). If you do replace the torpedo external wired fuses try and get copper plated fuses as the cheap uncoated aluminum ones tend to oxidise.. just rotate the fuses with a little end load to scrape off the oxidisation/ make them work!
It is pretty easy to get into the multi switch (well relatively!). There is a big connector about 2-3 from the fuse box in the same area.. it is square bakelite about 30x20x70.. you can actually prise this apart and check the soldered connections to the back of the pins.. mind I had the steering wheel and instrument binical apart before I got to this..anyway that is easy compared to a fan on a 460! I found out it was fuse contact after I had stripped all that out!
Thanks. It's not the fuses - that would have been nice and easy. There is no power coming from the combination switch and it looks like a nightmare to access it. I'm trying to bypass it
