Saw a brand new "new" generation G on the road in southern Germany, Bi Turbo V8, sounded great, but from a distance thought it was a land cruiser as so much wider , front end appears to have lots of ground clearance.  Unfortunately didn't have time to grab a picture

Re: New shape G

Not knowing the prices, is this above list price? Hard to imagine them ever being used to full potential

Re: New shape G

Mercedes promoted the car in a German holiday resort, I felt no temptation for a test drive. The new car makes sense if your starting point is the G63 but the functional feel is gone, too fussy inside.  Different target market as compared to the classic Gs.

Absolutely agreed, Theo. I'm sticking with my '88 SWB 460.

Re: New shape G
I had a good look at a static W464 this summer. Journalists have hailed it for being bigger outside and thus bigger inside without a 'compromised' driving position. This is plain wrong. The doors are so much thicker than the current model that the external width increase is more than used up. It's similar in the back seats although legroom increases very slightly. Lots of luggage space at the very back is taken up with enlarged wheel arch boxes. It reportably drives much better than the current model. There were sensors and wires attached to the base of the rear dampers that might not survive a drive through the bush. Overall it looked more modern,is undoubtedly safer in the event of a crash, but has lost a lot of utility value. Perfect for most new buyers.

Saw one on a roundabout just of the M56 near Hale last week. LHD - looked a bit odd to me, especially the front end. Obvioulsy a lot wider etc..
