Hi all , Ime a new member owner of a 1986 s w b  300d  g wagom with 86k on the clock .Ime a retyred fisherman living in the southwest of scotland.I bought this G wagon on ebay a couple of months ago because ime fed up of paying for little boxes with several little wires sticking out of them going wrong and knowing that the maker only put them on the vehicle deliberately to go wrong and cost me cash ,When this G was advertised it had a new M O T the day before I bought it so I believed all that was on the discription .As it was down at junction 15 on the M6 I hired a haulier to bring it home Its a good job I did because The turbo was buggered the injectors were the same the seats were well covered with covers but all destroyed underneath and the little pipe to the oil presure gauge had a hole in it leaking oil .All the above I have replaced with new apart from the seats of which I replaced with rover 75 leather seats after some modifications to the bases . to day I taxwd and inaured it to finde the hand brake cable on the near side was rusted on and the wheel would not even go around . I went back and forward untill it appeared to free but it was still dragging after a couple of miles so took the wheel of to find I could not free the wheel after consulting the manual and a cup of tea and some swearing I noticed the hand brake cable had been wearing on the shock absorber and was rusty  so I got the disc cutter out and cut the cable and released the brake drum and got it off all was verry good inside so all I require is  WHERE DO I GET NEW CABLES PLEASE can anybody help . by the way ime jim.

Hi Manxmariner and welcome!

Sounds like you've had a bit of a nightmare but you've come to the right place with some right brainy (as in they've got 'G' on the brain.. ) types here. I count myself as a relative newcomer so little or no help whatsoever! :D However if you give us your vin number I'm sure Gav Helme will be able to price a new part from MB for you, he's a very helpful chap. Sorry can't be of further use but good luck!

Chris

Re: A new member looking for some advice

I have had a look at the online parts manual ....it lists three different length cables...2090mm-2240mm-2300mm....no prices listed on Inchcape mb site......although these guys list cables at  just under 38 euro a side.......

http://www.g-manufaktur.de/shop/index.php?cPath=2_19_55

hope this is of some help.............for any other brake bits i use.....

http://brakeparts.co.uk/#page=vehicle&pageSection=model&mancode=MERC&bra...

they do eveything except rear shoes ...

New cables can be bought from Mercedes, the price depends on the length and the make of the braking system it will be either Merc or Perrot. Cheapest one is £28 next is £51 and the dearest Merc one is about £75 all plus VAT

Re: A new member looking for some advice

Jim,

Hello and welcome. Sounds as if you are going to be a 'hard core' member, fixing all the bits and pieces as you have done! Would be great to see some pic's when you have the time! I would recommend a few things;

1. If you can post up your Vin, or maybe create a signature with the VIN included (take a look at mine below). Its easy to do -  Go to the menu on the left and click 'My Account', you then have a new screen and at the top four choices - chose Edit and click, then page down and fill in on your signature. Don't forget to press save when finished. The VIN will allow us to see what spec your G is and also provide some useful information such as what the original spec was, year of manufacture , etc.

2. Drop our Parts rep (Gav Helme) a line - again with your VIN and he should be able to source the correct required parts. They will be official MB kit and I have found him to be exceptional at both supplying and pricing the parts.

I do hope that helps

Once again Welcome to the club

Perrot brakes The handbrake cable goes into a round socket on the backplate Mercedes brakes The handbrake cable has an integral two bolt flange on the end which bolts to the backplate The left hand side is slightly longer than the right side Here is a previous thread with all the info to save Gav covering the same ground http://gwoa.co.uk/forum/handbrake-cables Regards Gordon

Re: A new member looking for some advice

Hi Jim

Always a pain on the G as far as the MB EPC is concerned....

That age of G will almost certainly be running the PERROT brake set up with, as Gordon states Rear Brake Cables that attach to the Back Plate by pushing in with a small clip rather than bolting on with a bracket that is part of the cable like the DB MERCEDES BENZ type.

The SWB (2400mm) PERROT cables are A460 420 13 85 (1710mm) Right and A460 420 14 85 (1960mm) Left

The EPC lists both makes but also shows the longer LWB PERROT cables for some strange reason.

These Cables are £29.90 each retail + vat from MB dealers, MBUK don't keep stock but MB Germany do and 3/4 days should see them with you

Drop me a PM if you need any help getting them...

Gav

Re: A new member looking for some advice

Welcome, the 1st G I had was the same as yours, a 300gd. I would not be happy with the MOT station that issued the certificate the day before you bought it and I would ask them a few questions and if unhappy with the answers consider reporting them. Fraudulent MOTs are a serious matter as they are not merely a question of monetary fraud but also a health and safety issue. I hope these issues are resolved quickly and that you can start to enjoy what is a very practical vehicle
