Hello All - just bought a 1985 230ge and picked it up yesterday.  I did it all wrong and bought the first vehicle I looked at but the chassis seems close to immaculate and it managed the 90 mile trip home  without any major issues.

Looking forward to learning a few things on here before I decide whether to improve or just maintain it.   Guy

Hello and welcome Guy,

So where are you located and what are you going to do with your G? Is this your first one? Was it and easy buying experience? Please do share, and if you get the time , maybe post up some pic's?

Looking forward to meeting you sometime

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

Hello Spider1V . I'm in Gloucestershire.  I'm going to use it as a bit of fun for local trips, some gentle off roading and if the engine is up to it occasionally towing my boat to Cornwall - I also fancy a simple car that I can maintain to brush up on my rusty knowledge of motors.  I'll try and post some pics if I can figure out how to.  At the moment I'm struggling to start a new text line as the return on my iPad doesn't seem to work in the text editor!

Hi Guy,

Welcome to the gwoa forum, the 230 is a fantastic car and will give you years of enjoyments if looked after well.

Welcome, the ge230 is a good choice, enough power and a more modest thirst then the 280 when you get the chance put some pictures up. The 1st G-wagen I ever saw was a 230 auto in Almadine, it was gorgeous but not for sale but it inspired me to look for one

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

Thanks guys - it certainly seems a nice smooth drive with much better seating position than similar aged defenders I've been in.  The 'Land Rover' man I picked it with was cooing over the chassis construction and condition compared to his two series Land Rover that he spends most weekends welding - I plan on converting him with time.  I just havent decided how much to do it up yet - if I make it too tidy i will feel obliged to be more careful with it day to day.

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

welcome guy ! i reckon the 230 GES is the best all rounder too...280 is too juicy and the 617 diesel is a snail , the turbo diesel is the one to have but finding a 617a td version is rare. if yours is mechanically sweet your laughing !

where did you  find it ? pics please...

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

 Hello Hus.

It was on eBay a few weeks ago in the Birmingham area.  I'm happy with it and the 230ge engine seems fine for bumbling around - makes me smile so far and 65mph is v smooth.  Previous owner had a non mb stainless exhaust fitted which was 'adjusted' to fit and was touching the prop on right hand bends but was easy to correct temporarily - think it just needs tightening in the adjusted position.  Lots of little jobs that need doing to tidy it up but everything seems accessible - I'm sure there will be a few nasty surprises as well with a 30yr old vehicle.

Pics to follow in a day or so.

Cheers.

Greetings . Does anyone have a recommendation for insurance. I have a V8  G500 and best quote £700. I am in the UK.

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

To some £700 will sound an awful lot. To others not so bad.

It's all dependent on many things:-

Your age - young (bad), older (good)

Are you able to claim a No Claims Discount

Do you have another car (yes is good)

How many miles do you expect to drive your G each year (limited mileage is good especially if you have another car)

What is your occupation (pop singer is BAD, work in a bank etc. is good)

Where do you park your G overnight (nice secure garage is good, on the street where car theft is common is bad)

I take it your G500 is LHD (generally a bit more expensive than RHD to insure)

Reading over the above I can see that this is not much help (but I've written it now and can't bring myself to delete it).

Best bet is if you have another car insured and can insure this one on a classic car type policy (although that depends a bit on its age)

Good luck.

Hello Scouse

It's not me with 110 - that's Diesel Jim looking at the posts - and I took it as tongue in cheek anyway (rightly or wrongly).

Cheers

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

So my wife says its a bit postman pat, so I think new tyres and wheels is probably a first job (any suggestions)and then perhaps a colour change.  There should be some pics attached and I found a gwoa sticker under the seat which is now on the windscreen so I'm guessing there may be some history on here - hopefully not too bad

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

Nothing wrong with red in your photo - is there a thread somewhere on alloys and tyre combos that would fit as a direct swap - or can anyone give me some advice?

Try Direct Line. They were very helpful in my case, and reduced a couple of other quotes I had  around 800, down to about 300.

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

fred is correct, your G doesnt have holes for arches, and the metal arch design is a little different..keep it standard and original . my cabrio went off the rails many years ago...i dont regret it but if you asked me today would you have done it...??

heck , yes !! laugh

only joking...keep this gem factory spec.

Re: New member with 1st g wagon

Try Carole Nash for insurance. They do a newer classic policy and cover my 1994 G606 for under £200 fully comp!
3000 mile limit and 2nd car.
