Is my G too old ???
Should my G be retired from American Roads? It a 1980 280GE. In the states we used to drive a car for 3-4 years then it was shot. Headed for the scrapheap. That was 1980s-American made Oldsmosbiles, Chevys, Fords, etc.
Now, I 'm driving a 34 year old G on weekends, a 16 year old 318ti to work, and a 7 year old Chevy Truck at work. Question, when are these cars too old to drive ???? I mean we are at geriatric car age. These things were supposed to be crushed 5-7 years old. I've driven antiques for 20 years & never have been stranded. Run out of gas-yes. Overheated & drove it anyways-yes. But never stranded.
My G is still competitive in acceleration (unlike my VW bus) & stops very well. I borrowed my buddy's restored 1940 Ford Coupe. Great car, but a deathtrap handling-wise.
I can't wrap my head around the fact I drive a car that rolled off the line when I was 7. Don't get me started about my next project-1970 MGB-GT split bumper.

Stu,

Says who? some suit who wants to sell you a new car?
Never mind, when you're too old to drive it, someone else will be along :)
the only real issue on a G-Wagen of this age beyond regular maintenance is rust not the mechanicals
Remember a G Wagen is not just for Christmas it's for life!
My G is 24 years old on the 16th July 2014 and im having a birthday for her!! she looks as good as any 5 year old car ive ever seen.... will drive it until im 80...(49 at mo)... things from this factory were built to last...simple to work on and repair..!! keep on trucking!!

I foolishly made a similar comment in an article I wrote for OR&4WD magazine (as it then was) about old Land Rovers being, in that instance, like Grandpa's remarkable ancient hammer; only five new handles and two heads in sixty years, etc. etc.
A bit of harmless piss-taking, I thought.....
I was immediately inundated with an enormous amount of truly astonishing hate-mail from the bobble-hat and sandals brigade. You'd think that in order to own and operate a Land Rover, a sense of humour would be essential.
Apparently not!

You have hit the nail on the head - Land Rovers aside (my son had truly awful 110 which was by no means funny and he binned it for a £1000 Surf to drive to Cape Town) old Gs (should) make you laugh, even if they are frustrating as is my 1983 460 GEL and the electrics on my 463! When I get truly irritated I take heart from the famous Gunter Holtorf.
