In a nutshell:
The 460 is the original G-Wagen which was built until 1987. It is the most utilitarian of the lot with a switchable 4wd/2wd
The 463 was built from 1991 onwards and has a much more sedan-like luxurious interior with wood trim and other conveniences such as electric windows and much more plastic trim on the outside. It is permanent 4wd.
The 461was built from about 1987 to now and if i'm not mistaken is the replacement for the 460 in that it is very much a utility rather than luxury vehicle and is what is used by the military. But I believe it uses the same chasis as the 463??

Mortinson can probably correct me on the above.

For indepth detail see Vinters website:

It was made until 1989.

Made from 1989, when the 460 was discontinued. RHD production started in late-1990 and the first units were imported into the UK in 1991.

Production of the 461 started only in 1989, when the 460 was discontinued. This is why Mercedes Benz UK never imported the 461 and all of the "old syle" pre-1989 G-Wagens that you see over here are 460s. The 461 replaced the 460 and is virtually identical to that one, bar for later engines, at least until 2001. Therefore it has rear-wheel-drive with connectable front axle (4WD).

BUT:

Not even in Graz there are people who can tell whether a 1989-produced G-Wagen is a 460 or a 461, because production of the different versions was interloped between these two models so the only way to really tell is the chassis number.

In 1989, a few preproduction 463 series were made in LHD with the complete 463 chasis and drivetrain (230 GE - M110 and 300 GD - OM603 engines and ABS and permanent 4WD) but 460 bodywork. I know at least two of these (see: http://www.gwoa.co.uk/node/133 ).

From 2001 the G290 GDT was no longer made and the 461 was no longer available for sale to the civilian market. Production of a new 461 started, again with the chasis and drivetrain from the 463 (G270 CDI) and the bodywork from the 460 (now 461). This is offered for military applications (Canadian G) and state clients (Worker). (see: http://www.gwoa.co.uk/node/106 ).
