Misfiring
My old 280Ge's engine, ( Model 110.994) intermitently misfires and loses power when accellerating. Otherwise engine very smooth at high revs. Mercedes still unable pinpoint trouble. Any ideas ?
Had same problem with mine on tickover and overrun. Take car into dark area at night open bonnet and rest on windscreen, stand on bumper and see if you can see any arcing of HT leads anywhere. if so your leads need replacing.
Check also in day light that your bonnet stay is properly secured and not contacting the low volt side of coil.
Some thing that happened to me once after a rest stop and cost me the event.
Hi, your misfire sounds like the voltage regulater. Happend to my 91 300GE.
I have similar problem wth mine,
did you find out what the problem was ?

I read an article in the MB club magazine about the same thing. It turned out to be the control box (I'm not exactly sure of its name) The box with the green wire from the front engine pulley and another cable to the distributer. Basically the soldered joints on the circuit board were breaking causing intermittent faults. There was one major resistor (or something else) which had very poor solders and thus ignition was lost. I'll dig out the article about it and send it to someone ( Jesus?) by email. I don't know how to post attachments on this board
Sounds like a cracked disi cap to me. and you wont see any tracking because they have a rubber cover over them.
There are a number of other causes of miss firing ie.
worn or failed
plugs
leads
coil
rotor arm
damp in the disi cap
coroded disicap segments
wet mud or simply dirt in the plug well
the sensor on the front pulley is a. tdc sensor and activates the rpm counter and is unlikley to affect ignition.

Easy to check then,just plug in a spare and see if it runs ok, no need to take the existing one off, just unplug the wires and plug them in to the spare, earth it with a clip wire.
I'm interested how this turns out.
It would make sense to carry a spare in the vehicle, they would be readily available from breakers as all 123 280Es would have one.

Thanks for both advices. There is no arcing from the spark leads or contact with the coil.
It feels like the engine is straving of fuel, particularly when hot, to the point of shutting down. In fact I have to shift to neutral and use a bit of gas in order to keep it running. At the beginning of a trip, it idles ok. It is only after an hour or so in traffic that this symptom becomes apparent.
