Re: Mercfan

I bet I can beat any claim to being the boss of bargain basement Mercs, without including any G's.

Current motley crew include:

W140 500SEL 1992 runner, no test.

W124 200TE 1994 x2 (both 7 seat autos) taxed and tested, plus 300TE and 300D estate parts cars.

W124 230CE Coupe non-runner

W123 200 non-runner

W208 CLK230K Cabrio taxed and tested

Plus 3 Pontons, two cheap, one not (Coupe). Plus Ponton donor. Plus W108 280S parts car, plus Fintail 200 parts car.

Don't get me started on the G's...

Re: Mercfan

Oh no! I'm totally depressed now.

I own an S500 and the last thing I wanted to hear is that it's on it's way down to a value of £1,000

I think, I lay claim to being really depressed; I have only three, 1/8th scaled models of G500s.

Sorry, I misunderstood when first reading this. I thought that's what Spider suffered from when going round Beaconsfield roundabouts at a slightly slower pace.

Re: Mercfan

Ok then, here goes...

Apart from the usual accident investigation, independent "expert"(use that term in the loosest way possible) in big money court cases engine related(bit of a turn-around from a past of building engines for the midnight racing fraternity), I like a good tinker, so always have a few projects on the go. Mostly, but not only Mercs. When they're done and good, I'm bored, challenge gone. Someone comes by, likes it, takes it off my hands and I carry on with the others. Also do a few government and local authority tenders here and there and one-offs, as and when I can be bothered and its interesting enough. Mostly stuff going abroad though - things are far too politically correct, environmentally friendly bollocks, etc in Europe. There are a few people who don't like their stuff to be out in the open and come to me because I work on my own in the middle of nowhere and can keep my mouth shut if I need to. No employees, partners, associated or anyone else to muck things up. Just me. Not even my other half knows what I'm up to. Hence why also very very few pictures. And also because of the lurkers and non-lurkers on here who are not exactly "vetted". In my (rather big) shed, I do things as good as I can, at my own pace, when I feel like it and won't be rushed for anyone. LOL. Am quite fortunate that I don't need to look for work - I have enough for the next 180 years+, as it is. Anyone on here, please don't be offended if I turn down work, I really really can't take on any more.

As for what's around me in terms of mercs, let's see: 1xW404, 6xW460, 2xW163, 2xT1, 2xC124, 1xW124D, 1xW124TD, 1xS123TD, 1xW123D, 4xW114, 2xW202(K), 2xS210, 2xW210, 2xW638 and a few other odd things. Factory 107 V8 with MANUAL GEARBOX, anyone? Not all are mint nice things. Some are (semi) daily drivers on the road, insured, taxed and mot'd, some are test mules for trying out different things, some are destined to be parts donors, some are ongoing projects, some are pure workshorses, some are in long term storage as a pension fund. Some are a combination of the above.

This forum here I find is a good place to be, to learn, and to share opinions and maybe help with a different angle or viewpoint...kind of give-and-take.

Re: Mercfan

Was looking forward to the OM606 monsters....

Going to cause a bit of upset here.

The 606 is ok, in terms of it's better than 99% of non-merc/mtu diesel engines.

But within merc's own ranks, it's a shit.

Like the later 613/320cdi, it works too hard at keeping itself going (internal stresses).

I've tested them at length.

A properly built 603 can make at least as much power as a (also properly built) 606 and be more reliable and more fuel efficient. The whole 24-valve lark is just a "keep-up-with-the-jones'" marketing nonsense.

Or if you want torque and fuel efficiency, then there is no better than a 2.9.

The cdi engines have that heavy internal components to stay together with the high pressures, that they have to be rev-limited to keep them flying apart. Something designed in such a way that one small little fault/sensor is going to leave you stranded is a bad idea from the outset.

And then not even to mention the myriad of frail/destined to fail fuel pipe fittings and o-rings.

Just look at the amount of 605/606's that have been/are junked because of owners not being able to keep dumping money at them trying to find and correct faults.

That never ever happened with the 602/603 engines.
