Browsing the Freeview channels and see that there is a series called SUV Superbuild on Quest.  Episode 3 is about the G

It is on Thursday 17th on Quest+1 at 10-11pm and then repeated on Quest on Saturday 19th May 2018 at 5 - 6pm

Set your recordings. I expect it will cover the GL as well.

Re: Mercedes TV Programme - SUV Superbuild

Caught this programme on Quest an hour earlier than on Q+1 (as you might expect!)

A fairly detailed walk through the history of the G Class origin, build and factory, the Schockl Test 'mountain' and the people that work there.  What is amazing is that they make up to 20,000 a year. Well over 1,000 a month.  And when you see them work you wonder what the benefit is of being hand built!  You might imagine a labour of love (well it actually is) but it is also done 'wham, bang, thank you maam' and there goes another!  So their QA has to be good as well.

Where do they sell all their 'seconds' that dont make it to the new builds???   I'd really like some of the new seats, even with a few wonky lines.

So, welding the body takes 38 hours of work and over 150hours per G.  Lots of fuss about the ladder chassis, and the 3 locking diffs, and the go-anywhere DNA.  It is a little surprisng that with all the 40 years of development, they didn't make it more serviceable or correct the known weak spots we all know.  I guess those are only problems for 'old Gs'.

I also felt at the end that as lovely as the G55 / G63 / G65 are, where are the engines and models for the workforce instead of the money-force ?  I guess the G Professional didn't pay as well (and lowered the marque?).  So it's a good job you can still take a 460 and create an awesome renovation.

It was followed by a programme about the Porsche 918 Spyder - same voice over style.  now that construction looked more individual and painstaking. Well, they are £500k each and there will only be 918 of them. Classy.

Re: Mercedes TV Programme - SUV Superbuild

I was left thinking that the most recent models with the biggest engines are a bit of a waste of time, given they require so much tech to stop them falling over.
