National representations of MB differ from country to country. MB north America, for example will commonly specify vehicles to a different requirement to MB UK. This is a Japan national version and I don't think that it's had much more than superficial AMG styling. I believe that on the 463 both extended and standard axles were available as options and also Chromed swivel housings. The UK tended to have wheel-arch extensions, extended axles with chrome swivel housings, and wide wheels. Maybe Japan was different.
A check of its VIN may yield a data-card listing the factory options fitted, including verification of the claim for retrofitted, wide axles.
here's another example:
They look like the standard arch extensions with some extensions of their own.
most likely standard M103 engine and the ad makes no claims to the opposite (300 GE); G36 AMG was based on the M104 engine
but M103987 indicates a standard 300GE engine ?
need to check whether it has one of these:
Hello.
I have spoke with silverstone auction today and they have said the car is modified by AMG in Japan. Is it possible that AMG have their own outfit in other countries?
They also said there has been a number of interested people in this. From your experience, is the guide price realistic at £20000-25000? My wife and I saw a pretty appalling example last week and that was priced at £17000. When the AA man carried out the inspection he said it was heavily rusted. So, the possibility of this car being from Japan may mitigate this?
What does that rocker cover signify? The one pictures above. Thank you.
The presence of the AMG cam cover may indicate (although perhaps not conclusively, if absent) whether the engine has also received the AMG treatment or whether it was only a body-work cosmetic 'upgrade'
The difference may be that between 177 hp of the standard M103 engine and the 240 hp claimed from the AMG upgrade.
Some months ago there were many Japanese imports for sale her in the UK and prices were all over the place, as many of the dealers were not particularly G-Wagen savvy. (Many other flavours of ex-Japanese Mercedes were also being sold.)
Generally, Japanese-imports (from southern Japan) will be almost as new as far as any rust of corrosion is concerned. They are also generally better maintained. Most will have had seat-covers and interior mats and serviced only with genuine MB parts.
I think that this particular vehicle may attract a premium because of the AMG 'badge' but if the engine is standard, then I would look for another Japanese import that you may find for between £15,000 and £20,000 - if the price of this one goes too high. (Some nice ones were advertised around £13k)
Also, while nice to have more HP to propel these rather heavy machines, the standard M103 is very sweet and not too thirsty. Not sure what the AMG upgrade would do to this, and because the AMG upgrade of this engine appears to be quite rare, it may make it difficult/costly to source certain spares (cams, valves, pistons, probably)

as always a diligent answer from Arnie; with Gs (especially from the 90s) no mutation can be excluded but to my knowledge there was no G 3.2 AMG (i.e. M103), the engine was exclusive to the C class; if this version had been available there is a difference in terms of value/ desirability between factory supplied (i.e. ordered through a Mercedes dealership) or aftermarket conversion; in any case a G 500, G 36 AMG or G Brabus 3.6 (both M104) would stand higher in the pecking order; which is a complicated way of saying that what one really wants is a G500; at a potential £25k plus buyers premium for a G300 GE you are not miles away from G500 prices, admittedly with higher mileage and a more worn interior, still food for thought.
