Each car made by Mercedes has an individual data card that lists the model and serial number of each of its major components (axles, gearbox, transfer box, steering box, engine, etc), as well as the codes of the standard and optional equipment fitted to the car in the factory. Your MB dealer can give you a copy of the datacard if you give him the complete VIN.

To be able to decipher the actual meaning of the codes, see

http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~mtor/mbcodedsc.html
http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~mtor/mbvdc.html

This way, you'll be able to tell whether the car has been modified at any stage.

so now I'm here to, this forum is nice, I keep looking on regular bases, by the way, do you no a good place where I can buy stuff for my 300 GD, specially the fenders are very expensive when ordered from a Mercedes receller (like +/- 1000.00 euro) don't you no a alternative for this fenders, same for the thick heavy PU "striping" around the car, and remember I live in Belgium

Oswald:

There is ABSOLUTELY no way that your 1982 W460 300 GD was fitted with ABS for the simple reason that the ABS was only developed by Mercedes/SDP for the G-Wagen when they were designing the W463 G-Wagen.

The first G-Wagens to have been fitted with ABS were the preproduction 463 series Gs which were made around 1989 with chassis, engine and drivetrain from the 463 series but the bodywork and interior of the 460. This meant that all of them had permanent 4wd, three electro-vaccum operated diff locks and ABS.

You can see one of such prepro 463s in this link:

Some members could not make any sense of what they saw in the first of the two links shown above. This is because the special version codes used in G-Wagens are at the bottom of the page, so you have to scroll all the way down the page to see the codes which start with one letter followed by two numbers.

For example, I know that my G-Wagen was factory fitted with headlamp grilles because the datacard shows the code L30 although theare are no traces of them in the car anymore. I also know that the its allow wheels are not original because the datacard does not show the code for them (R78)

I suggest that you save the complete website, just in case it suddenly disappears from the www.

I hope that you'll find this useful. Cheers

Thanks for your praise but as a good Spaniard I am a republican and a supporting of our beloved king Juan Carlos I so I could not accept honours from the monarch of a foreign power with a foothold in my homeland (Gibraltar) but thanks anyway.....

To post pictures you need to host them in any of the free hosting providers like:

and then link the url to your posting.

Cheers

Re: Mercedes DataCard codes

Have you got the data card for your car? Every new Mercedes-Benz has a Data card with it when it is delivered to the first owner. Usually it is attached to the service manual (log book). It is a very important piece of information. Only problem is, they are always in German......... So here are some translations to English.
