Mercedes-Benz G-class Wolf water test
Hello, we decided to arrange a water test our Wolf.... here's what it looks like :
To caution our budding G-Wagen Owners who may be tempted to do a water test of their own, please heed your recommended fording heights as what the video does not show is any driver opening their door after the test. It is likely some water could have flowed out.
As fantastic as the G-Class is; the civilian version or for that matter the military versions are not internally water proof unless work is done to that effect.
Different G models have different air intake levels hence for example a 350GD (rare or non existent in the UK) has its air intake behind the front, right (O/S) headlight. Water reaching that height would easily hydraulic your engine.
Generally speaking, fording heights is just below the bottom of bumper height.

So that it doesn't float and therefor can keep good contact with a river bed. A common failing with many so called 4x4's ending up being carried down stream and/or being rolled over by the current.
Does anyone know much about these Wolfs? What Engines they came with, is the drive train the same as civilian versions etc.
They look great

even in baby blue

Hi
I have a wolf, and another half one.
Yes, they're pretty much the same although have a few military extras 24v, welded on tie downs on the chassis, a place to keep a shovel under the bonnet etc.
The 90's vintage German army ones were/are G250's, these have the OM602 normally aspirated 2.5 5 cyl diesel with a 5 speed 'iron' gearbox. Body wise, they're a 'convertible', have a wooden overlay on the rear floor, no carpets, just a mat over transmission tunnel, have a big drain plug in front l&r foot wells. The doors are a bit different and the windscreen folds forward.
However, mechanically, generally the same. HTH
Cheers Scott
Can we see your Wolf? Pics please. Do you know if they came in single non camoflage colours like black, brown or dark grey?
Sure, it's being worked on by me, but here's a couple of pics. This is in german army camo.
