Just renewed my membership and have today received another hi visibility GWOA vest, a nice key ring with light, a couple of tax disc holders (although I think these are probably now obsolete) and some windscreen stickers so many thanks to Tony for that nice surprise.

Now I just need a G to go with all of that.

I'd even been toying with the idea of a G350 but several recent posts have put me off that idea.

All the best to everyone for 2015.

Re: Membership renewal

Hi Mark - it will be well worth the wait!

So why are you shying away from the 350? I think a member in the IoM had one and gave some positives, and I think Aero94 went out and got one, and appears happy with it (but that could be because he has/had a RHD 2001 G500 SWB in his stable as well laugh)

Your G is out there and is waiting for you, its just a matter of time.

Re: Membership renewal

I seem to have become a forum junkie and read almost everything that's posted in the hope that some of it will sink in and I will therefore become better informed/equipped to make a sensible decision. I think there were other posts regarding the 350 but this thread definitely had quite a few negatives - http://www.gwoa.co.uk/forum/news-basicaly-forum-filler

Re: Membership renewal

Only negative i can see is the price.... servicing can be done at specialists to save on costs.... not seen a G350 south of 50k at the mo...  if it were me... id look for a G55 AMG...!!  my favorite....only negatives is fuel cost.... which is getting less by the day... and hard to find in RHD   although i think the engine sound makes up for fuel... who needs a radio!!

Dear Mark,

the negatives in the thread are overstated by people who long for an extremely robust and simple car like a 460, an early 463 or may be a 461 (but that has a CGI engine).

You can whinge and whine but if you want power, you need electronics.  I know a number of G fans who have owned all types of Gs incl 461s over the years and they all agree that the current non-AMG Gs are the best Gs ever, on- or off-road.  The cars a more refined, have more power (a g350 bluetec is probably faster than spyder's g500) and have not lost their off-road ability.  We are talking about people who do not do extreme off-roading but use theirs cars for the daily commute but also to reach remote locations for hunting.

As far as the negatives go:  about 1,000 G350 Bluetecs are sold every year, there are very few complaints. Mercedes modified the 2011 cars with 9l oil capacity under warranty, I know of no issues re the 14l oil capacity cars.  Therefore, stick in your search to the factory equipped 14l oil capacity cars (2012ff). I own three cars, driving the G350 remains special, a unique combination of practicality, exclusivity and understatement.

Hi No need for a gauntlet.. the G500 does 0-62mph in 10.2secs (Merc say this is the 'expected time - it's very hard to find an official quote for the 500!!) and the 350 takes 9.1 secs - apparently. As longs as Spiders G500 is the 292 bhp version that is :-). The really quick ones are the G55's which get quoted at 5.2-5.6 secs.... mind you I'm guessing in a case of hare Vs tortoise a 350 would still beat even a G55 as at full throttle I bet you'd empty the tank in about 20 miles :-0 Just for the record.... for me nothing beats the sound and feel of a sorted petrol V8.... it's just that in the real world once you are above about 10 miles an hour even the quite mundane diesel will see off a lot of bigger petrol cars - just get in any of the newer generation 3.0ltr Audi's or get a lightly chipped BMW 535 diesel, and put your foot down... My Wife's E350 V6 3.0L CDi coupe never ceases to amaze me in terms of acceleration .. we've had it 4 years now with no engine issues... mated to the 7G auto its sublime... smooth and fast returning an ave of 41mpg.. would love this in my 460!!! the only downside is how it sounds..... there is no substitute for a V8 !! apparently there is a device that synthesizes the sound through your car radio!! best of both worlds!! http://www.gizmag.com/soundracer-v8-video-review/14019/

Well, even at 14 years old, I can say it does travel up to 60MPH a little faster than 10.2. Where the 350 does overhaul me is from 30-80MPH. THE 55's are just another story! I would recommend that YOU DO NOT TRY A 55. Its the equivalent of Crack-cocain for real petrol heads! You push the right pedal down, the gearing drops to the lowest gear it can get into and then three things happen all within about .5 of a second

1)The noise changes from this steady 'lub-dub' of the V8 into a howling roar of what can only be described as 1000% pure power

2) Two and a half tones just squat down, like a power lifter just about to push up with a couple of tonnes on his back, like an all England scrum pack - raw power.

3) Its like being a shell shot from a Howitzer!

And all this happens when ever you do this from about 0 up to 110MPH!! it not just theater its like a grand performance, every-time! Hated going from David's AMG to my G500, just could not get the same 'ommmph' and I want one, I want one soo bad......

But as Simon has commented most modern diesels can now overhaul a petrol motor, but sometimes it can surprise even them when you are on their tail up to around 120mph ;). Though how many G's are there compared to BMW 535's or Audi's, just a tad more common than a G. wink

Hi Spider1V Agree.. :-) Simple fact is with a G your already in a different place to most. And I certainly don't drive a 300GD (albeit with the benefit of a ScouseG 617a transplant) for the speed/economy! I think the question of a V8 and a G are actually two different things. For me you stick a V8 in almost anything and you have something you automatically want to drive with the window down, and a big grin fixed to your face. I used to know a guy who had put a Rover V8 in his SWB soft top landcover, who helped out when I was 17 and doing Duke of Edinburgh Award. Even the fact that we were getting gassed sat in the back (he ran a rear exit exhaust), never stopped us from jumping into it for the roaring, burbling ride though the country lanes of the lakes... Besides, apparently us diesel users are driving round spreading the next generation of disease inducing micro particles about - irrespective of the level of 'regurgitation' but into the new systems - I dread to think what harm my 1982 617a is doing! Bottom line though, sometimes there is more to life than mpg :-)) Simon
