Has anyone ever removed the thick rubber strip just below the bottom of the doors? I'm wondering if it's a rust trap?

Yes it is. Removed mine a month or so ago to reveal major holes in both sills, apparently started by rust around the fixing holes. Will post photo when I figure out how to shrink it. Chris

Interesting - I also replaced the one on my drivers side as the masking flap had cracked. But no rust at all behind. Did take opportunity to spray some waxoyle into holes though whilst they were accessible.

I do not have my G with me right now due to engine conversion... but how do you remove this piece of rubber?

I know i sounds like a stupid question.. but please humor me on this one!

Hi Alex On the 460 it just screws on, well mine did. I replaced the screws with marine grade stainless though. Also did the same on the side trim. Did it 5 years ago now. Removing all the original screws after 25 years was.... Entertaining :-) Ta Simon

Thanks for the replies but as Alex said how do you remove it as there are no screws or fixings visible? I think I will have to pull a strip off the middle but I don't want to force anything without advise.

Re: Lower Rubber strip along the side of the G

On the 463 the strip along the middle is actually a flap that "hinges" along the top.

I used a wide flat bladed screwdriver (as in second picture) to prise up the flap which then reveals the screws that hold the strip in place (as in third picture). If your strip goes behind the wheel arch trims (as in first picture) then you will need to remove those first so that the entire length of the flap is accessible.

A few pictures attached which hopefully are self explanatory.

Apologies for the fact that I haven't cleaned G for a while.

See a lot of 461 and only 461 have a black plastic blanking grommet pushed in the screw holes to cover the screw head up and protect from the elements

All the side trims seem to have them, why the 460 never did is beyond me

Don't think corrosion of the screws is the main problem cos the screw goes through rubber into a plastic 'plug' so is isolated from the metal. I think grit is trapped behind the rubber and abrades the paint through to the steel. Having repaired the sills on my 460 and used all new plugs /screws I'm going to remove and clean the rubber strips every now and then Only takes minutes!
