Hi Guys I am looking for a G to use off road and would welcome some thoughts. For the last 6 years i have been using Pinzgauer diesels but fancy a change. My current Pinnie 716 diesel goes up for sale up for sale this month. I have started to research the G as I would like it to be my next project. I have had defenders, Jeeps, Toyota's, and almost every other large 4x4 out there over the years but not a G. A few years back I tried to deal a with that guy from NI that used to be on here, I think he is now on you unwanted list. I found him to be a Walter Mitty type of guy and his prices in dreamland so after a number of calls from him he gave up when I told him my thoughts on his prices. My little bit of research so far seems to be these models G 300 LWB 1996-2000 G 400cdi LWB 2003 Insurance quote was high on this model and concerned with electrics in lots of mud and water ? Not sure on the G 270 yet and I'm not bothered about LHD. Can I ask for some recommendations from you guys. I do like to get my vehicles into the mud and do get out on a number off 2/4 days offered trips here in the UK. Thanks Steve

Hi Same here, had them all but a pinnie The g wagon does it all well and is comfy, you just need to go through it all first I would sell mine but I would only want another They are very well built and the diff locks are a bonus People will shoot me down in flames for this On the strata florida and rocks etc they are in a league of their own and good in mud Mud is not their best quality Mine has mud tyres on.One time climbing a farm track it had all diff locks in and only just made it The farmers landrover 90 pisses up the bank The g made it up but I was unsure at the time. If I put it in 3rd and thrashed up there would be no problem When I got up the fields the farmer was shocked Why I asked as you flew up there He has arb lockers front and back but the 90 looks so standard I never thought Another comment was that if I needed pulling out his 90 would not do it and a tractor was needed so perhaps g wagons are perfect all round Its just clay type mud and the weight of the g wagon wants to bury itself Thinner tyres to bite in might help but I would not have any other vehicle again G wagons do it all well and I think you would love one Sad to say but the only vehicle I would ever miss is my g wagon and I have had pretty much all cars and 4x4 The only car I would love is a Mercedes c63 but its the fuel. Not as good as m3 but brute power was very good fun and a lovely car to drive. We wont be off roading that thing though G

"....G 400cdi LWB 2003 Insurance quote was high on this model and concerned with electrics in lots of mud and water ?..." You can get insurance for around £350 p.a. through some insurers, who will insure as a G500. But, yes, higher than a G300. Electrically controlled transfer case shift may be an issue with water

Re: Looking for a G

Hello Steve,

By any chance were you the Pinz that took a group of G around SP a few years back?

Out of the choices you have given I would recommend/suggest the G 300. While on paper the 400 will tick all the boxes, it is difficult to get both parts and servicing here in the UK, mainly because the diesel 400 V8 is not supported by MBUK.

For simplicity I would think a nice 460 or if you can find one the 461, though the 463's are excellent off roadsers. If you wanted more power - then maybe consider an engine swap with a 606,606A - though I would research this VERY carefully as only a handful of people can do this properly.

If you have considered the 400 - I would point out the fact that the 500 is possibly one of the best all round G's especially in a 2000, 2001 guise - though I would be expected to say that! :)

The SWB models are better at the off road stuff if that is all you want to do in your G, but the LWB are more practical.

Re: Looking for a G
I'm near Salisbury and have my mother's gwagon here, she's just decided to sell after having it for 19 years. Its a white 300 gds but had a garret turbo fitted when new by Sigma Engineering in Gillingham, it was the owner's wife's car. It's engine is excellent but a few minor issues with the interior and a dent on near side rear. My mother loves it but couldnt afford the cost of importing it in Portugal (where she now lives) as they are are now stopping right hand drive imports. She is afraid they'd impound it. So I have got it back here 2 days ago. I haven't advertised it yet and have joined this forum today with the hope of selling to someone who knows these trucks. If interested let me know and I'll get more info and take some pictures.

Hi Spider1V It was me that sorted the Salisbury Plain trip out for you guys unfortunately I had to get my Mate Chris to do the day for me as I was in the middle of moving from Dorset to Cheshire. I am now back down south in Salisbury so do quite a lot over the Plain. I'm there next week for another 3 days. One of the good things about the Pinnie's is the room in the back I have a bed in mine along with bench seat, 24 volt microwave and al sorts of stuff. I wanted a G that would do 20mpg so the 500 is out for me. I have been looking at a few and like the 400 spec but not sure as I like the electrics as I do use my vehicle for some tough offloading conditions. I would be looking to kit it out with sleeping in the rear and get rid of the rear seats. Yes I would be interested in the white G if you can let me have some more details and were I can see it

By the way I tend to do all my own repairs having a motor trade and REME background, done a few Pinzgauer's now. I was flown out to Zambia couple of years ago to repair a Pinnie. Rear axle strip down along with transfer box problem so quite handy on these things. Here is my web site if you want to have a look around http://www.pinzgauerworld.com

The 400 will do 26 MPG Engine parts and spares not a problem in UK. The 300GD that you want to look at has the OM603, which I think is a great engine that does not rely on any electronics. Compared to the Pinz, the 300GD probably will not feel underpowered, but you ought to also try a G400 for comparison.

Re: Looking for a G
Correct Adrian, parts supply and back up for the G400CDI is no issue...at all It was probably actually the most common model built, maybe more than the V8 500's etc...certainly more than 10,000 of them, not many other models got near that, other than the Wolf models but I reckon even more 400's out there than that...used parts supply in Europe is excellent! I think what Spider was saying is that the UK dealers have little knowledge of the G in general, the G400CDI in particular is quite rare in the UK in LHD only and the dealers see even less of them than normal and with the increased complexity and tight working space they will shy away even more when confronted with a 400 with issues... that's our experience anyway....

Probably also why if there are any issues, you will hear more of them, but I see many for sale on Mobile.de with 400,000 km or more, so some of those engines must have worked well.
