Hi Adrian,
Mine was also leaking badly, I had it reconditioned by someone who does this for a living and it turned out that only new seals were needed as the innards were ok.
I can't give you a indication of price as it was a favour
Cheers

Try looking in the 'services' section of your local autotrader. There's usually a gearbox reconditioner near to you who should also do steering boxes. Having had this trouble with an old Patrol, I resolved it through one such company in Glasgow.
You may be able to access these companies through a search on the Net for gearbox reconditioners. I tend to agree with Kashi, it shouldnt be knackered - much more likely to be seals or at worst bushes.

The steering box can be -definitely- reconditioned, which is in most cases a check-up and replacement of gaskets.
The W460 workshop manuals describes the disassembling, recondition and reassembling procedure in section 46.62, subsection 071, but the one that I have is for the older steering box version 760.2 and not 765.502 which is the one that I suspect was fitted to your car.
The EPC lists a "Gasket Kit" for the 765.5 steering box with part number A310 460 0161 but it says that this reference is no longer available. In any event, I am adamant that anyone could get the replacement reference for the gasket kit in any MB dealer.
It follows than that any specialist could recondition your steering box and it should not be pricey.
