I have a problem with the sun roof of my G wagen leaking and have started taking headliner out and have removed both sunvisors and both grab handles and trims at side of windscreen, also slid door rubbers down  off surround and headlining still seems to be held by the rear view mirror.  I cannot figure out how to remove the mirror and then the headlining seems to disappear into the mechanism of the sun roof. Does the sun roof have to come out?

I am assuming the pipe running from the sun roof to the pillar is leaking and as still  I can't remove or even see behind the headlining am stuck - so any help would be appreciated. THANKS Woodenhead.

Re: leak in sunroof.

It is a big job to remove the headlining. If I remember correctly the rearview mirror needs some brute force to get it to snap out. The lining then sits in rails running the length of both sides of the car which need to be removed. I will try to attach some photos but I have not had much success recently. See removed W463 SWB headlining. Sunroof remains fitted for now. See tubes at each corner of the sunroof tray which are likely to be corroded and the source of your problem. The tray can be repaired or replaced, it is the same tray as the W140 S-class saloon. Consider replacing the sunroof seal at the same time. Good luck. I would not willingly take on this job again.

Eddie.

Hi Eddie

Couldn't really tell from that middle picture but I suspect it is the case. Is the roof itself double skinned. I have that light ding in the top of mine caused by a fallen and wondered if it could be pushed out from the inside? Or maybe that is being a bit optimistic

Hi Audiominx,

I have seen a picture of the dent on your roof; the picture not being too clear for my eyes, the repair to dent is possible. I think you have looked at paintless repairs and have been advised that, due to suspected respray no one wants to touch this repair as I suspect it would mean trying to push the dent out could form cracked paint.

Your repair is possible by conventional body work which cold mean removing the inner roof lining to push out the dent but I would imagine the body shop would use riveted studs to pull out the dent as best as possible and fill to form the final shape and finish off by a respray.

It could mean having a full roof panel respray or if possible a blow in spray where the dent area is sprayed and it is the skill of the sprayer to make the spray look like it blends in with the rest of the painted roof.

I suggest getting a few quotes from several body shops and get them to discuss and describe the process of repair to you.

I am no expert in body repairs nor do I know of repairs costs at to-days prices but my guesstimate for the repair and spray would bebetween £350 to £650.

No the roof is not double skin, so removing the headlining to repair the dent in your roof would be helpful (probably the best way to do it). However it is very time consuming and therefore probably very expensive.

If you haven't dealt with this yet, I can put you in touch with a guy near me who is nothing short of brilliant with these kind of things.

Re: leak in sunroof.

just querying Eddies comments about the sun roof sharing w140 parts, I always thought it was shared with the w126 model, can Gav confirm?

Hmmm. I'd like to know for sure too please Gav. Not that I have any intention of EVER tackling a W463 sunroof again.

Sunroofs are just a nonsense, aren't they? LOL

Sorry, not being helpful - couldn't help it though. cheeky

Re: leak in sunroof.

Hi

Checked a few early 1991 / 1993 chassis numbers and it would appear that the frame / mechanism is mainly W126 supplied with an odd part from the W123 series as the W126 would use also.

A few bespoke 463 parts too like the plate itself and the drive tube

The Switch and Motor are W124 just to confuse the issue....

While we're at it, does the 124 steering wheel fit a 463?
