Hi everyone. I've just bought a set of extra seats for my lwb 1990 463 from the lovely Mr Vulture, thank you sir! Before I have them fitted I just wanted to know whether I should put lap belts in as well? There are a lot opinions out there, what have others done please? thanks Mud

A pleasure mate, nice to see you! When i have had these seats i have always fitted lap belts to stop person from getting thrown around too much if anything happens. My thoughts are that since they face sideways a 3 point isnt so much of an advantage.

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

I have lap belts each side.

If you are going for the congestion charge exemption, you will need some sort of restraining system and will need to send photo's to the DVLA with pic's, also showing the reg plate. Can't post any more pics (have reached my limit). But PM me your email and I will send 'em on.

Obviously ignore the above if you are not wanting the above laugh

Well the seats went in fine, but there were no mounting points for seat belts? The garage did say they could drill through the arches and fit spreader plates etc. As they are just for emergencies I think I'll live without the belts to save butchering the car. I also need some retaining straps to keep them folded if anyone can find the part number? Thanks Mud

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

There is quite a bit of information suggesting that  the wearing of lap belts on side facing seats can cause  severe internal injuries and spinal damage due to the lateral forces acting on the abdomen during a frontal impact.

It is for that reason  there is no legal requirement  to fit or wear seatbelts on side facing seats. Apparently it is better to rattle about the back of the vehicle in an accident than be folded in half by a lap belt, I don't think I would like to experience either.

It might be worth pointing out that it is fine to carry adults on side facing seats but it is illegal to carry children under 12 and 135cm in height (there are no child or booster seats that are certified to work with side facing seats).  I know  all kids love to ride in the jump seats but if PC Plod decides to take an interest then you could be unintentionally on the wrong side of the law.

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

I accept your point on spinal injury but having been in the back of a car myself without a seatbelt, I  broke tree vertebra in the base  of my spine from rattling around in the car during a road accident

I have always fitted lap belts, but it should be noted they are lap and not waist belts. I would recommend the retractable lap belts sold by exmoortrim .. see link below.

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?
I was in a car (in my fast driving youth) and crested a blind hill on a de-restricted pennine county road, to find a guy pulled diagonally across my lane trying 'park on the grass verge officer' I clipped him (missed his wife who had got out and was stood admiring the view on what would have been an escape route for me - yes things do go in slow motion luckily for her). But it took impacting (and completely writing off) another three cars and 60 meters to bring me to a stop (yes I was culpable, what can I say, young and in an Audi Quattro on a beautiful road I knew). Finished up with no front wheels - or much of a front end to be honest, and a toyota carolla as a bonnet adornment. Luckily no one else involved - and I had a sore thumb and forehead - It would appear I hit myself in the head.. Lessons learned - don't drive like a dick (or at least only as fast as you can see and stop) especially on roads you use a lot, and if I had not been in an Audi (built like tanks) with airbags (20 + years ago so old tech steering wheel version) wearing a seatbelt with procon10 (remember that?) safety system and I would most likely not be writing this now. Result of all the safety systems - mild rebuke from the Police (who went to town on the BMW driver doing the parking 10 meters under the brown of a blind hill manoeuvre) - and a refreshing cup of tea whilst I reflected on how impressive Audi's safety systems were. So horse's for courses. Mind you I don't wear a helmet when out on my bike! You pays your money, you make the choice, you live with the outcome. Ta

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

The kids love traveling in the back of the Pinz but the side facing seats make this illegal on the public road so I decided to fit a rear facing seat with lap belts. I am not suggesting that this is a safe way to carry children it just makes it legal (and fun)smiley

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

Why wouldn't it be "safe"?

MB had this sort of set up in both my W124 300TEs and it seemed to work really well. Some would say that you are safer facing backwards in most cases anyway.

Definitely safer than sideways in any event.

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

I agree with you that rear facing seats are in most cases the safest way to travel.

What I meant by 'not the safest way to carry children' was in relation to having two kids attached to a jump seat by lap belts in the back of a Pinz is possible not the safest thing to do.

But then I have not always transported my children in a conventional manner smiley

Presumably this was before you'd perfected the rear facing version??

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

Smiled when I saw this.

My rear seats have been a great source of fun - and extra passengers over the years. Most we had allbeit for a short distance, was 15 [kids]. And, of course, they also help me get into the office without an oyster card!

I've a spare set of the elastic retaining straps if you want them.  Happy to put them in the post if you PM me. Part number A463 936 00 88. Make sure you also get the small clip that screws to the back of the upright section - that is what the wire hook at the end of the elastic retaining strap clips into. East to fit. All you to is detach the panel under the seat, fasten the end of the rubber and pass out of the small slot.

I could take a photo of the belts that I have. Mine was a demo model at MB Milton Keynes in 91/92 so they may not be standard. But they appear to be Mercedes parts.

And if anyone else is considering selling Cream Beige rear seats, I'd certainly be interested. Sadly it seems the only way I'll get hold of donor fabric to mend my front seats. Tried everywhere. Germany and Austria too. Colour code 8E91.

Photo of seats. And also couldn't resist jumping out and taking a photo on the way home this evening as I pulled up next to a C111. Gs were always ahead of their time - but see this C111 in the flesh. So a 35 year old [approx] alongside a 24 year old - both stopped by a traffic light on Whitehall earlier this evening.

Best wishes

The straps are part A  463 936 00 88.

I'll get those into the post tomorrow or Tuesday.

You'll need the clips for the static/upright part of the seat - and one of the pictures shows the seat belt/restrainer this was fitted when the vehicle was sold after being used as a demo unit.

Re: lap belts or not on jump seats?

Please let me know if those two rear seat "retaining" elastics arrived OK?

Presume that they were what you needed?

Best. Alastair.
