If you are looking for an aftermarket replacement to the standard shock absorbers in your 460, 461 or early 463 series, look no further. I had the fully adjustable KONIs fitted in my old 460 300 GDS and was so impressed with its balance between use on and off the road that I have now bought a new set to be fitted to my 463 300 GDS.

I did have the other set up in the hardest position and have been advised to use the same with my current car. They hold beautifully the car on the road and don't appear to be harsh at all when driven off the road.

I paid for a four piece set just EURO 390. Fronts are KONI ref no. 301322 and rears are 301323. I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Got them fitted!

I got my G back today after a day at the garage for fitting of shocks, rear springs and an original MB bullbar!

Before it was fitted with front Bilsteins and unknown rears and the rear springs must have passed their sell-by date because the car appeared squatted. The car is absolutely transformed. The poise when driving on the road is second to none.

It's funny because my mechanic lent me his wife's Range Rover as a courtesy car and I've never see something more wobbly in my entire life! The contrast could not have been greater when I picked up my car!

.....And it looks so cute with the bullbar!

Cheers

Man where’s your principles?
Riding in the dammed. How did it smell?
Thought walking bare foot would have been preferable.
Or maybe you were secretly impressed with truly luxury motoring?

What????

Horrible. His wife is into horses and uses the Rangie to transport hay bales and horse sh"t

Ans so do I but I had to take my son to school and go to work and thought that my dignity could wait a little

No comment. I prefer my old silver G to any contemporary Rangie. All the folks in the office have been cheating me for two days asking whether I had deserted to the Rangi camp. No way....

Jesus,

My brother's '91 463 could do with the same rear shocks and new springs treatment.
Could you tell me where you got your Koni's from and did you fit original MB springs?

I've just edited this because the KONI.COM site appear to list the 82 series of schocks for the 463:

http://www.koni.de/_produkte/4x4/afram.html

Mercedes-Benz

G-Serie (W460) VA: Lmax = 632 mm, HA: Lmax = 585 mm
[79-90] 8240-1195SPX, 8240-1197SPX; or 30-1322, 30-1323

G-Serie (W461) VA: Lmax = 632 mm, HA: Lmax = 585 mm
[90-03] 8240-1195SPX, 8240-1197SPX; or 30-1322, 30-1323

G-Serie (W461) VA: Lmax = 585 mm, HA: Lmax = 585 mm
[90-03] 8240-1196SPX, 8240-1197SPX

G-Serie (W463) VA: Lmax = 585 mm, HA: Lmax = 585 mm
[90-03] 8240-1196SPX, 8240-1197SPX

Thanks

I've got Koni's front and rear in mine and they're excellent, together with the Suplex springs the ride is a perfect mix for on and off road.

PS. How could you get in a Range Rover - yuk!

Arnie,

I bought the shocks from my friend Carlos Acosta in Spain. He not only gave me a good price for the shocks but also threw the used springs for free. I have no idea of the references listed on the KONI website. All I know is that the KONIs I bought are obviously good for the 463 series.

Perhaps somebody else knows better?

Cheers

On the basis of this discussion, I have recently fitted a set of Konis to my 1988 swb 460 300GD. I just found my local KONI dealer (in Tavistock, Devon) and got them to order me a set. Had to wait about a week for them. They give an excellent ride and are about 20 quid a piece cheaper than genuine merc ones.
