Hello forum members.  We have had an unfortunate incident of breaking the steel key off in the lock of a 1997 G300D.  This is the style of key with a single button on the fob that operates the infrared door lock/unlock function. The steel part of the key is spring loaded and rotates out of (and you push it back into) the side of the plastic fob with a small physical action button.

The dealership can get a new one - for north of $C 600 and a lot of patience as the delivery time is unknown.   The electronics are fine, it is just the steel key that is broken.

Has anyone been able to source a replacement steel key?  See attached photo.  Surely there has to be a supplier who can provide just the steel key...

Any and all help much appreciated.

Thanks,

...Mike.

Re: Keys

The steel key part looks not unlike the key from my 1994 G300. I had several of these made by a local key shop for minimal outlay.

Not clear from your post whether the steel key part has actually broken or just become detached from the plastic fob part.

Worse comes to the worst maybe you could just get a new regular steel key made and attach it in some way to the fob. OK it wouldn't be quite as neat as the original but functional and a lot cheaper than $C 600.

Re: Keys

Thanks Mark.  I agree, even a "best fit"steel key separate from teh fob is better than  trying to get the actual part from MB....which is not even guaranteed to exist just yet.

Thanks,

Re: Keys

You should be able to order just the steel blade from MB to lock number

It is held into the chrome metal section that pivots with a small "roll" pin which can be driven out

The new blade should can with a new roll pin

If you still struggle send me a PM with VIN and i will have a look

Re: Keys

The part number is A463 766 01 06

The parts picture is confusing to be fair as it doesnt show it!

When you look at the main flip key part numbers it shows Master Key with Infra red transponder and this part number as master key without infra red sender

Re: Keys

Thanks all for the information.  Teh blade of the key actually broke in the lock, so I still have the base of the key attached to the fob with the roll pin... just only 1/2 of the blade.

I'll try back wtih MB to see if they can source just the blade. THanks for part numbers...

Re: Keys

Normally in the UK 2-3 weeks from Germany for a blade once you have provide the suitable ID etc

Guess it may take a little longer if you are in Canada?

Re: Keys

Just to close the loop on this...   We found an automotive key cutter who had the right blank and cut a steel key for us.  It was then a simple matter to cut and file the new key to fit into the slot of the old key and secure it with the roll pin.   Problem solved for $7!

Thanks for all the input received!
