I wonder if anyone can help me. The interior light unit on my 1996 GES has stopped working, the sunroof switch that is also part of the unit is still working fine. I have had it confirmed that it is a fault with the light unit. A replacement form Mbz is close to £300. So hoping to find one cheaper.

The part numbers on the unit are 124 820 10 01 (for the lights?)  and 124 820 68 10 (for the sunroof side?)

thanks Alex

Re: Interior Light and sunroof unit

It's the same unit as found on the Mercedes 190

Plenty on eBay for around £20

here you go:

(just the first one on the list, so look around)

Re: Interior Light and sunroof unit

Thanks for the links.

Just to confirm are these two parts are compatible?

The items in the links have the part number 124 820 23 01 for the lights side of the unit, my unit has the part number 124 820 10 01.

Thnaks

Re: Interior Light and sunroof unit

I think in the case of the two part numbers you identified, it is just different OEM supplier versions- that's all. The '23' was made by Hella and your '10' was made by Sidler. The connectors and functions are the same.

Other part numbers for it include: 124 820 68 10  and A 124 820 24 01 , I have used a 190e light in a G and all worked fine  In any case you have the original sunroof switch which is still OK and that is the most complicated thing about it.

here is a 124 820 10 01 :

You can see that where the part number is molded, the '10' has been 'updated' from a previous number, so some number differences are also just revision changes

Also I bet that you could probably repair your existing one since if you look inside from the back, you will see that the the light switch and its circuit is all from shaped bits of metal and very rudimentary. Might be just a bad contact, or burned-out lamp, or it might mot be getting any power from the door-switch circuit. Do you get the fasten seat-belt sign lighting-up?

Thanks for the confirmation. The seatbelt lights are not working either. So it does appear to be a problem with unit not the signal from the doors.

Re: Interior Light and sunroof unit

Quite the opposite i think, since the door switch activates both - the seatbelt sign and the interior light, if in the ON position.
