Hi

I have a problem with the ignition switch barrel. I couldn't turn the key, steering is locked. I took it to the garage and he said it was the ignition switch.  I am trying to find this part and do not know what it looks like.  Can some send me a picture of this part or a diagram please.  He told me it will cost £400 for the part and £400 to install it.  I have just lost my job in November and would be able to afford it.  I  am trying to find a used one or a cheap one on the net.  Many thanks for your help.  My car is 300D LWB - K reg or 1992.

Re: ignition switch barrel

With age/ wear etc, sometimes requires a knack to free off the steering lock, mine has a fair amount of play in the ignition barrel,  the labour charge seems high?

Don't take this the wrong way but how did you take it to the garage with steering locked?

3 possible conponents

Barrel and key

Steering Lock Housing

Ignition Switch

they all fasten together

I have had a couple as they wear .. where you have to take the weight of the wheel off the lock before it will disengage

When it locks it sometimes pulls the wheel and trying to take it off you will feel a resistance

Pull the wheel against that resistance and see if it will come off

Re: ignition switch barrel

Barrel is hard to change unless you can get to position one... if you can't it's either drill it out or change the whole steering lock.. either way is hard and labour intensive

You can unscrew the ignition switch from behind with 3 small flat head screws once the electric plug is pulled off

Once off if the steering lock turns then the ignition switch may have collapsed inside

it will have a part number on it and will be shared with many models of the era so used should be easy to find

I may have all parts used but not around for a few days so can't tell for sure

If you PM your chassis number I can check part numbers and see what I may have but won't be able to do it in a short timeframe
