I am an idiot....
Somehow, don't ask how, Having left the lights on and drained the battery, I managed to put the power pack on the wrong way, probably for about three minutes at most. Put the battery on Optimate for a couple of days and today discovered the following.
1. It was very difficult to start, when it did, it the tick over was much lower than before, probably around 3K revs less (it was a bit high before)
2. ABS light is on.
3. My Becker won't switch on.
It's running OK and every thing else works as it should, lights, blower, indicators etc etc.
Hopefully I'm just looking at a fuse or two and I'll look tomorrow when it's stopped raining.
Has anyone else been this stupid (and is prepared to own up!) and if so what were the consequences?
It is probably worth testing the fuse in the overload protection unit if the ABS lamp is on.
Regards
Lower fuse box, ( two self tappers) you will see the ovp relay, has one or two fuses on it. You could test fuses on the built in tester ? Also would check Earth on battery to body?
My dad did this on an eighties BMW (honest, it was him not me!) and internal fuses blew in the OBC and the stereo, and the rectifier in the alternator was fried. Suggest you check all the above.
Chris
Well, you may have fried the electronic idle adjustment and the cold-start enrichment on the KE Jetronic control module. I can't recall whether the module is protected by the OVP relay, If it is, maybe you just need to sort an new relay or just a fuse for the existing OVP relay.
I have some of these symptoms on my ge300 initial reluctance to start then a slow build up to a steady idle, I must remember not to press the pedal b4 I turn the ignition as it doesn't occur then so I'd guess marginal over fueling. I'll change the plugs, rotor arm and cap b4 winter sets in.

if it is still reluctant to start when the engine is warm or hot, then the problem may be with the fuel accumulator and/or one-way fuel valve.
The ovp relay has a fuse or sometimes two fuses on the top, will be obvious when you lower fuses. Look on eBay and you will see what an ovp relay resembles. Unsure it will cure your starting issue? Is Abs light still on when it starts?

ETA: Scratching my head a bit as I've now established that my power pack has "reverse polarity protection"
