Somehow, don't ask how, Having left the lights on and drained the battery, I managed to put the power pack on the wrong way, probably for about three minutes at most. Put the battery on Optimate for a couple of days and today discovered the following.

1. It was very difficult to start, when it did, it the tick over was much lower than before, probably around 3K revs less (it was a bit high before)

2. ABS light is on.

3. My Becker won't switch on.

It's running OK and every thing else works as it should, lights, blower, indicators etc etc.

Hopefully I'm just looking at a fuse or two and I'll look tomorrow when it's stopped raining.

Has anyone else been this stupid (and is prepared to own up!) and if so what were the consequences?

ETA: Scratching my head a bit as I've now established that my power pack has "reverse polarity protection"

Re: I am an idiot....

It is probably worth testing the fuse in the overload protection unit if the ABS lamp is on.

Thanks, the OVP,  that right? How does one go about testing it?

Ian

Lower fuse box, ( two self tappers) you will see the ovp relay, has one or two fuses on it. You could test fuses on the built in tester ? Also would check Earth on battery to body?

My dad did this on an eighties BMW (honest, it was him not me!) and internal fuses blew in the OBC and the stereo, and the rectifier in the alternator was fried. Suggest you check all the above.

Chris

Re: I am an idiot....

Since Ring Tech support admitted that what happened should not have happed, they have gone silent. I've asked them to pass the correspondence on to their CS, I await with unbated breath!

The problems with the G I will let my techie sort out as he'll have her soon for the TT'ing. That said I am having great difficulty starting. Takes an age and seems to hunt. Once started it sounds/feels like she's firing intermittently on half the cylinders and the rev counter's going up and down like a tart's knickers. After a few minutes of coaxing her with the throttle, (maybe three or four) she settles down and behaves well, although at very low tick-over. Once settled down she starts again with little problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Well, you may have fried the electronic idle adjustment and the cold-start enrichment on the KE Jetronic control module. I can't recall whether the module is protected by the OVP relay, If it is, maybe you just need to sort an new relay or just a  fuse for the existing OVP relay.

Re: I am an idiot....

Very likely I think. It's going in for TT conversion soon so I'll leave it for the pro's. I've been in touch with the PP manufacturers who are scratching their heads as to how this could have happened.

They suggested I return it to them for testing.

I suggested independent testing once all the damage has been established.

I have some of these symptoms on my ge300 initial reluctance to start then a slow build up to a steady idle, I must remember not to press the pedal b4 I turn the ignition as it doesn't occur then so I'd guess marginal over fueling. I'll change the plugs, rotor arm and cap b4 winter sets in.

if it is still reluctant to start when the engine is warm or hot, then the problem may be with the fuel accumulator and/or one-way fuel valve.

Is there a separate fuse for the OVP and if so any idea what number it is?

Re: I am an idiot....

The ovp relay has a fuse or sometimes two fuses on the top, will be obvious when you lower fuses. Look on eBay and you will see what an ovp relay resembles. Unsure it will cure your starting issue? Is Abs light still on when it starts?

Had a look see what you mean. Yes ABS lamp remains on when eventually starts. Will try and have a look tomorrow if me bones will let me. Thanks
