Can any one help?????

I have a 460 300GD swb that when it is on tick over it has a nasty noise - a sort of grating like maybe the clutch is not fully engaged and clicking against a gear?

When I put the clutch down the noise is gone and reappears when clutch is up.

Any ideas of what this could be? is it serious? is it a diy job or ??? could it be expensive?

Many thanks

Clutch Noise

I think it is probably your clutch release bearing mine makes a bit of noise sometimes and not others but it will come to a point when it will make the noise constantly.
It is fairly easy DIY for the reasonably equiped person and althoug I havent done one on the G yet I have done a few other vehicles. The G gearbox is heavy but there is lots of room underneath. Not like an old Ford Escort I once did and got the box stuck on my stomach and couldnt move.. I actually broke a rib..
I would suggestyou buy a complete clutch kit as if the relase bearing has gone the rest of the clutch wont be far behind and you would nt want to do the job twice. If the plate is ok you can always take the parts back you dont use.

Thanks

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks I wondered if it could be something such as this. Should I be buying a clutch from Merc or is there a better/cheaper place? and how much should I be paying any ideas?

Cheers

Sachs

The various 460 clutches are made by Sachs. I bought one a few years back from a good motor factor so I suggest you shop around before paying the MB price!

Clutch

There are four or more different thrust bearing types for a Sachs clutch in a 300 G make sure you have the right one or you will be doing it all again in about 3000 miles or so.

Horrid noise

If you go to merc dealer chassis No. essential. gear box No. even better if you go to pattern then take your old bearing along and compare all dimensions. beleave me even tho the MB clutch is made by Sachs Boge there is a world of difference. ther are a number of measurements that can be made to ascertain that the clutch bearing and the throw of the master cylinder plunger are all matched. 3mm difference can mean another new clutch.my advice go to MB for parts, have them installed by a very compatent engineer.

Borg and Beck clutch kit £145 from Brown Bros, but any factor can get one. Average good back street garage will take around £150 to fit it. Merc dealer will love you, and want to supply parts.
Dont do it on your back - if you misalign the greabox housing you could bend the shaft and really have a bill - unless your 100% sure you can do the job. A lift or pit is vital, pits are better as you can roll the box on a trolley jack to position it for reassembly.
I KNOW - I've just done one.
Take the opportuntiy to bleed your hydraulics and check that the piston in the master cylinder is coming back past the vent holes - otherwise it jacks the pressure plate off the friction disc. Do put the heat shield back on the slave cylinder properly - it is awkward lining up the top bolt but it avoids premature breakdown of the fluid through overheating!
