Hi, I've bought a 1990 lwb 463 300d on french plates. I have the french registration document, the customs declaration has just come back, she passed an MOT this morning and I have the DVLA import pack. I am trying to complete the V55/5 but it proving difficult. I do not have a type approval certificate, do I really need one and if so can anyone help please? The form asks for a type approval number / catagory , type, variant, version, manufacturer, etc. There are loads of other boxes about length and trackwidth etc which I'm not too concerned about, but I would like to put the towing capacities down. Can anyone help please?

Thanks Mud

Hello,

You should not need the type approval certificate because  that information will be on the French registration document. If you really want to get one, you will need to write to MB UK , with your chassis number and other proof of ownership and ask for a certificate of conformity,( CoC). They have a special department for this and will charge around £150 for their service.

However, as the car was already registered in a European country, it should not be necessary.

If you send me a PM with your email, I will send you a copy of my recent V55/5 application from last year, you can copy most of it, particularly the type approval numbers, which when you see them, you'll probably recognise the on your French registration docs. In fact, the example they give on the help sheet is pretty much it for the type approval. The towing data will be different for my SWB and your LWB, but I can show you what it should be. The emissions data should also be on your French documents, but the DVLA are only concerned with g CO2 / km, which you should easily get for your engine from any number of sources.

All of this info, is otherwise on the CoC, but all the relevant items ought go be on the French docs.  ( they were on my Italian docs) . PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy of my CoC and my V5/55.

Mercedes charge £30 plus vat and send it special delivery pre 9am .

been woken up on a Saturday at 8am .

as the car is over 10 it's quite easy .

do you have a nova number if not google nova hmrc. No cost just another bit of red tape.

Yes you need a Nova number, I had to complete one when i imported a car last year. As the member said it can be completed on line at no cost, just a formality to advise the  HMRC you are importing a vehicle.

If you worried give DVLC a call, I found them  very helpful, and they talked me through the process and sent me the relevant forms. Importing a car is no great shake.

Re: Help registering a French 463 in the UK please?

hi mud,

you car is more than 10 years old: you DO NOT need a type approval certificate. All the other forms in the import pact do need to be filled out. i imported my 463 from germany where all of the data that you mentioned is stated on the german registration documents and it is just a matter of copying these down on to the british ones. unfortunately, i have no experience with the french car reg certificates so can not help you there, but i assume - as a europe wide thing - that these is mention of the weights and measures of your G. Once you've got you MOT and british insurance documents (you can insure your G on its chassis number initially, then once you have the british reg number and docs you tell your insurance company these and they will reissue you a new insurance certificate and you are good to drive on uk roads, once you've paid your road tax). as howard said, call up the dvla. i also found them very helpful in the process.

good luck,

ph

Re: Help registering a French 463 in the UK please?

All the info should be on the French registration documents. You just need to know what to look for and where to look. eg Model / Variant / Version codes. Hopefully, the examples I sent will help.

If you look on the EEC library you can download a lengthy document which explains all the entries in every one of the EC countries registration documents. This was done to make this process of re-registering within the EU easier. However not many motor authorities are aware of this, and so they still ask you to do the leg-work.

The CoC from MB does make things easier in the sense that all the information for your vehicle is listed in English, but the same info will also be on any of the EC countries registration documents, since about 2001.

As your car was sold in the EC and manufactured in the EC after 2001, it will have the EC type approval and this will be in the French registration papers.

When I re-registered my car, the DVLA told me it was not necessary to have insurance for the re-registration process, but this was after I'd already insured in on VIN to take for MOT, so don't know if that advice is totally correct.

Don't forget, there is also a GBP-50 First Registration Fee.

You'll need a Nova number to put on the v55/5 orm. Be VERY careful with the date you enter online on the NOVA section as the date of entry. Basically you won't get the number and will be asked to  pay tax and a penalty from the date of entry before you can register the car.  It's meant to be declared from the date of entry but.....

Re: Help registering a French 463 in the UK please?

Yes, EITHER date of entry OR the date on which you decided to keep the car in the UK (in case you might have been thinking to take it back to France etc) - but then,on the application,  the 'date of entry' should become the latter of the two, otherwise, the default position will be a fine and you'll have to explain to have it waived.

And also, the date of declaration should be within 2-weeks of the above, or you will have a fine for being late.

If you make the NOVA application on-line, then the DVLA will automatically have all the information.
