Help Please: Track Rod Ends
Hello - my W460 280GE has been in the garage for months now and they are struggling to source a track rod (end?). They have described it as a bar that runs from left to right near steering box. They have had several parts shipped from mercedes but nothing fits. Chassis no. is WDB460 232 270 522 46; 1988 year.
It does seem like parts are getting extremely hard to come by; is anyone else struggling to keep their cars on the road?
Regards,
James
James, There's an old thread on here about this. I think I read that the part numbers are mixed up on EPC. Have a search
As far as I remember, one cannot buy the end piece alone. The trackrod is sold as one unit which of course is annoying because you only need the end bit. Try Europarts , or the german sites. I did not have problems in sourcing one, but this was abt 5 years ago.
James, You'll need to clarify if they are talking about the Track Rod OR the Drag link. ONE's forward of the axle the other is Behind. I get mixed up with the names myself. For the rod (let's call it) forward of the axle I just got two ends for my 463. For the one behind you can only buy one 'end'. The other is complete with the rod. I hope thats correct for a w463. I think the rearward rod is called the Drag Link. Then to compound it all there are different sized threads and Left Handed options thrown in. What a car!
The bar between the steering box knuckle and near-side front hub knuckle (RHD) is known as a steering link bar; this is dealer item only.
The seemingly replacement track rod is no longer available and one is forced to buy the complete link bar.
Do keep your old link bar after replacement and slowly search for matching track rod end off other makes.
Chassis number is important to the dealer as these do come in two different lengths, one is for a wider axle fitting.
Search for it on here as has been suggested. For my 1988 I got this bar from Bavarian Taxi Company. The rod end at the steering box cannot be changed so you have to buy the whole bar. Mine was slightly different in shape to the one that came off but fitted fine; the differences are minor. I think I splashed out on the OEM variant as it still saved me £100.
This one really you need to read http://www.gwoa.co.uk/content/drag-link-part-number-needed
This one is long an older http://www.gwoa.co.uk/node/4666
so - garage has been back in touch - they gave me the wrong info - its the steering arm from the steering box to the left wheel
