Anyone out there changed front discs and pads on a 460?

How difficult was it? (I’ve done this job a few times but not on a G)

Could you talk me through how it’s done please? Still haven’t got round to getting a manual and this is the first time I’ve needed one. MUST get one!

Plus where did you source the parts from?

Plus how big a job is it replacing the bushes in the front hockey sticks?

As you may have guessed by now it went in for its MOT today! Thankfully it went in 6 weeks early to allow for this type of event. (Highly unlike me, it’s usually all last minute stuff)

Thanks in advance,
Russ

Get yourself a manual man......

Russ:

Being already a member it's got to cost you a 3 minute telephone call to Mike Lilley plus £ 15 to get hold of the CD which you may keep for the rest of your life......

It's otherwise very difficult to transcribe whatever the manual says about changing discs and pads and I am not going to do it....

So get yourself the manual , man.

OK, OK I know and I will.
I'm just impatient and want to know NOW! Have a reasonable idea of whats involved but even with the manual it would still be good to hear from someone with first hand knowledge.

However I need the G every day for the next couple of weeks so it will have to wait. Will let you know how I get on and will take some pic's of the process and try to post them here.

HELP - FRONT DISCS & PADS

Hi Russ, When I first got the "Bucket" I removed the front discs to skim and can't remember having any problems at all. Pretty straight forward job.

A definite yes to this question! Bought two new discs from Brown Bros for £85 plus pads. Jack up (for God's sake use axle stands), take off wheel, slack off caliper and take old pads out, you can actually wiggle the discs out without completely taking the caliper housing off, just loosen it enough - this fact saves you from undoing the banjo bolts on the top of the caliper.

Its all pretty straight forward stuff. Advice - brush the bolts with oil and leave overnight before starting work, they'll be much more obliging!

PS. But dont tell Greeney.

Took a wheel off to check new disc's / pads were the correct size and ended up doing the job. Just finished the drivers side, as you said nothing too complicted but thanks for the advice.

For anyone else about to tackle this job suggest you use/get a 600mm bar with a GOOD quality 19mm socket. Some of those bolts are TIGHT! Plus access is a little limited so the slimmer the socket the better.

Got the disc's from local motor factor £60 the pair including VAT. They are Brake Engineering part No 952870. Equivalent to 460 421 00 12.

Next job replace the flexi hoses and short lengths of steel pipe onto the calipers (£2.67 from MB, hardly worth trying to make new ones from copper).
Slight snag. 2 out 3 bleed nipples on drivers side won't budge. Will soak for a week or so in plus gas. (couldn't possibly use your method John, I would never sleep at night worrying about the environmental devastation!)

Remember that metallic braided flexi hoses are available from the GWOA (Tim Carnell)

BRAKE FLEXI HOSES

Thanks Jesus have e-mailed Tim. Waaay cheaper than MB, as you expect.

Even though the 460 G does not seem to be listed in patern part replacements it would appear they are standard across the MB range. 495mm with 10mm threads. Around £9 each. Will probably go for the stainless ones off Tim though.

Cheers,
Russ
