Green 461 on the bay at moment
Nice looking w461 on ebay at the moment very rare indeed
Very nice indeed and it ought to have the main faults of the w460 resolved. Rather than having Steyr Puch running gear it has SP badges, These could be changed, I wouldn't bother though it might simplify insurance. Trying to get insurance on an SP will confuse the insurers. Interior much more hard wearing than the w463, does anyone know if the rear seat is bullet proof like in the w460?
These are very desirable fully loaded , cruise , central locking etc.
461 just a better 460 with some incremental chassis improvements
Steyr wwas just branding by importer ,the Pinzgauer maker
There have been earlier detailed posts on these vehicles
The power train - sprinter 602 rotary pump ecu throttle and auto is bomb proof
HOWEVER these G's are dissapointing and sluggish on the road , as well as low geared and juicy
I WOULD LOVE TO GET MY HANDS ON ONE AND GET THE POWER UP BUT THE ROTARY PUMP ( v57? )is a one off
Also the auto is the older type 4 speed with1:1 top gear
Verdict . Yes but...
That's a nice truck. nice colour, nice everything.
Is this a turbo though and not just a NA engine?
Currently the highest bidder. Please wish me luck.

Kevin
got every thing crossed for you kevin
Good Luck with your bid!
Spec is 122BHP/280NM
Really good and long lasting engine with the correct maintenance. Full synthetic oil, 50/50 MB Antifreeze (others eat up the headgasket). Looked after, it's good for way beyond 500k miles untouched. Not looked after, they self destruct at below 100k. Most common cause incorrect anti freeze, headgasket leak internal, shut down hot water on piston, full on hydraulic on start up.
Auto box is of industrial quality and virtually indestructible.
Huge advantage offroad, especially with rev limiter on the engine which limits gear "range" in a manual.
Injection can be turned 100% mechanical without too much difficulty (pump, injectors, turn down boost a tad and throw away the ecu).
With all the above said, has anyone been to look at it? Is it for definite a factory turbo version even?
If it's not, then what I said above would be just poo
Indeed a 290GDT

No description...
Obviously needs closer inspection
Nonetheless a good post and as always, appreciated all round.
agreed you would need to look, too few feedbacks as an e-bay seller but a permanent 4x4 option for Kev
Got some more pictures from the owner of the green 290.
Engine bay, under side, under wheel arches.
Will post, just waiting for permission from the owner to share them.
Certainly not a rustbucket. Looks solid underneath.
Tyres are a bit of a mixed bunch.

In regards the green 290.
As a service to members, the following:
I have only just managed to enlarge some of the photographs.
And my advice is this: Do not part with any payment whatsoever until you have thoroughly inspected the vehicle!
Thanks mercfan - although it. gone past my budget for a 5 door.
I would however welcome any thoughts you might have on the 463 up for sale tomorrow:
Scroll down, its in alphabetical order.

Lot 39, externally clean, good colour, side steps, sliding rear windows and bullbars are nice options. I had a cylinder head rebuild at this mileage so I would budget £1k for that. How much commission will you pay on top? Passenger seat has missing trim and you would want a proper look at the interior but 1st impressions are a decent enough motor.
has received comments on this thread too http://gwoa.co.uk/content/463-auction
Ok, i'll throw some comments over on it's own thread.
In regards the 290: Nothing wrong with bidding, winning the auction and then renegotiating the price on the basis of "not as described", depending on what you find. Even works with major auction houses. Omission = false statement.
Currently the highest bidder. Please wish me luck.

Kevin
kevin is it yours
Did you win the bidding?
V976FPF. Thought it looked familiar. It was one of my old company car/demonstrators when I worked for ATL. In addition to importing and manufacturing Pinzgauers, we were also the authorised importers of Steyr badged 461 G-Wagons. Mercedes UK weren't particularly happy about it, but as they had virtually stopped selling the G at that time, they relented and we brought in quite a few of the more utilitarian 461 290GDT in station wagon and van formats. We also sold about eighteen "Super G" extra long wheelbase models in single and double cab layouts. Most of the latter went to fire brigades, West Sussex for example, and they had a station wagon command vehicle as well.
MBUK eventually put their foot down and stopped us importing them from Steyr as they had apparently concocted a plan to sell the 461s alongside the Unimog range as part of their utility offerings. But they never did, as far as I know. And we got on with manufacturing the Pinzgauer for world markets until BAE took us over and pulled the plug....as they do.
The Sprinter 2.9 turbo-intercooled diesel was unusual in that it had a very compact water/air intercooler. They were lovely vehicles; only available as autos and exceptionally good off road.

I believe the 1998 Panel Van as above is the one I bought direct from ATL (& Hi Quercus)
It has been parked up this couple of years and I might consider selling it, post some TLC and an MOT test (the tough-love NI version btw)
Other than servicing and an autobox rebuild ,it remains factory spec unmolested.
It has the 120BHP spec Sprinter engine and drives very well indeed,
Only "boker" is the 24.?? mpg (i.e. never 23 nor 25) tank in tank out, apparently regardless of driving style or duty
cheers
Marcus
Yes thats' the one.
I have the same spec vehicle - just a couple of years younger, it is my first g and my daily drive is a sprinter 311cdi which is very quick even when loaded.
My G290 TD is not far behind and i would'nt call it sluggish at all and loves to be loaded with all my crap.
its still got plenty of pull at 70 and is very enjoyable to drive.
The sprinter engine in the 290 is super reliable and easy to maintain and i love the sound it makes!
of course id love another gear for motorways but now having got use to the 4 speed auto box i woudln't want to go back to manual.
I guess a higher performance engine would give increased accelleration but would this use more fuel?
I get approx. 25/26mpg which i can just about stomach :0) and im sure the one advertised could achieve this if maintained properly
best regards Dave
