Good morning, I've been offered this g wagon over the weekend, it's a 300 gd A reg LWB

Manual, runs and drives but hasn't been MOT'd for a couple years

Overall it's not bad, chassis is clean but has rust on inner wheel arches and starting to bubble in a few places like bottom of doors.

Interior isn't in bad condition but this is real basic spec. No air con!!

Sits on 21" bbs alloys in good condition.

Any indication on what it's worth would be a great help! Prices online vary so much it's hard to judge.

Re: Got offered this g wagon over weekend - what's it worth?!?

Rust in the rear 3/4 is to be expected as is rust on the doors, its an 83/84 registration date so among the oldest out there, worst place to repair rust is around the window so if that's ok it should be a straight forward fix, if it runs and drives generally its worth saving. So budget for repair panels for the door bottoms and the rear corners, I'd expect seized front brakes too. What its worth is hard to say but when MOT'd and the rust cut out it should be worth £5-8k so work back from that point. More pictures would help

Has someone tried to give it a 463 makeover? Somebody must like those wheels but not me!

There has been some kind of mod to the front of the car - grill and wings look like some kind of one piece item -

Thank you for your advice on guide price - I thought around 4000 but the guy wants like 7000 for it but clearly it's not worth it - I'll leave it for now and offer him something for it in a years time.. probably after it's deteriorated even more

If it's a 460 you're after, maybe this will be of interest. And it's in your part of the world.

Shouldn't think there are that many 460s with aircon so wouldn't go expecting it to be on this one either.

or this one in Essex

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/G-Wagon/302199515339?_trksid=p2047675.c100005....

this one doesn't have the wide body kit which in the older cars is no more than a mud trap but it does have 16" alloys

it probably has a rusty rear though as the seller has avoided putting any pics of the back door and rear lights

Thank you all for your replies and links to other cars - i think that gold one is on eBay, if it is the same one it's a cat c which doesn't entirely matter but not for me!

The guy with that black g-wagon also has this one (see pics attached) and I've haggled him down to 2k so far but still not convinced.

It's a very old one though maybe one of the first?? It's a 300 gd still which is what I'd prefer over a petrol!

What do you guys think? The bodywork is a lot better on this and isn't really much rust anywhere. Primer needs a lot of prep work on it. One other thing is the front prop isn't in the car which makes me wonder maybe something's up with the diff?  He said it was like that when he got it!

Maybe I'm being to picky and stingey. I do love the look of the black LWB wagon but it's just too much.

One last question... are the g wagon 463's  more desirable than the 460/461??

Thank you all for your time

Try the DVLA site with the reg no for more info on its age and MOT history.

Looks to have had a 463 makeover which spoils its originality.

As for value................................ getting it back together will not be cheap or easy.

463 / 461 / 460 all desirable in their own ways. I spent the first 10 years of owning a 460  and wanting a 463 and the last four years being pleased I had a 460.

Re: Got offered this g wagon over weekend - what's it worth?!?

Theres a lot of body work to do, it looks like an after market kit of some kind badly fitted, that will need resolving, a windscreen, and that's b4 paint. You will need 15" alloys to fill out the after market arches too as the 16" steels [suggest it was a narrow bodied car] are too small. You should be able to drive it without the front prop because the 460's are normally rear drive switching to 4 by using the lever behind the gear change stick. I'd want to drive it b4 I hand over any cash but at £2k its not a fortune and you shouldn't lose money if you sell it on, but it could be a money pit if you want to make it perfect.

463's are permanent 4 wheel drive, have better engines and more comfort, they also have better rust protection esp the rear 3/4 where there fitted with wheel arch liners

I previously owned the Gold one that's up for auction. Don't think it was ever cat c. 3 owners though? It's a nice wagon.

. Hi, I must say I just checked eBay and it is a different g wagon - sorry for the misunderstanding!

I'll have to spend the next few days thinking about it. Probably would be cheaper in the long run to find one already restored

Re: Got offered this g wagon over weekend - what's it worth?!?

Hi As a now Ex 460 owner - 1985 SWB - I can vouch for the 'let someone else pay for the restoration'. I now have a 463, but that was more about always wanting a V8 G500 and I loved the 460 and especially the originality of it and in my opinion how much more comfortable you felt getting it off-road. The 463 is just as capable, but the 460 just feels more basic and more at home.

But to the point made. Mine had the usual areas of concern rust wise and I had it for 8 years.. In that time the total expense including servicing and restoration and an engine swap to a 617a - If you get a 300GD honestly get a 617a engine dropped in, they are just to asthmatic to live with unless you only do B road driving - was over £30k on it. £4k a year makes it feel a bit better and I am very fussy, and had a full body restoration, but still the rust came back.. and I hate rust.. but they can become money pits. But then again if it had not started to rust again I might still have kept it...

Just so you know if these cars are not looked after you can end up replacing the front wheel stubbs, refurbishing rads, steering boxes and gearboxes. Heaters are a known weakness as are wiper spindles, which can create lots of internal issues. Most of the rubber will need replacing, as will the suspension - and often the suspension mounts... and on and on..

As I used to say the difference between a LR defender and a 460 was the G was built to last 25 years with no problems, whereas the defender was built so when stuff goes wrong i.e. all the time, you can replace it in 5 mins with a spanner for £10.. Only problem with the G engineering was after 25 years it can all go wrong and it costs armloads to get it sorted :-))

By the way - I still love the 460, but you need to know what you are taking on :-))

Re: Got offered this g wagon over weekend - what's it worth?!?

Well put

I also hate rust. A dent is bad but rust is a ball ache and depresses me too

The comments you make are spot on and also about cheaper models lol. The defender does well off road as a standard vehicle but its job after job. Thats why as you say parts are so cheap

The defender too is easy to work on as everything is obvious how it comes apart. Its a big shame they did not get someone to get our land rover to be the best and a quality vehicle built like a g wagon. How hard could it be its not rocket science. Build quality and not to a price and make it comfy and user friendly. Even a 1979 g wagon is way more plush and rides better than a 90. I had a 90 and did the galvanised chassis and a 300tdi and it was ok for a weekend shooting vehicle but after a days off road in wales and 380 miles it hurt me. Many times on the same days in the g wagon and i get out just fine.. I was offered it back very cheap for what they fetch now. I was tempted just by the galvanised chassis and no rust. My wife said why as you hated it and thats why you sold it. Good point i said you are right so left it lol

I have done all my g wagon, axles engine box suspension etc etc and not just rebuilt but all new bearings and anything it needed. Yes it cost a fair bit but now i know its all good again. If you cant do it well yourself the labour would kill the job for some people and if you cant make special tools it would be even worse but the g wagon with proper axles and chassis is my favorite. A short wheel base nissan patrol did well but they are rare and too rusty now. Or a mint box shape landcruiser import around 1991 but they are rare and big money for a good one. The g is the only choice left even with any problems  and if its good it will hold its money well.Enough said
