So Sundays are my spannering days...

Of course as I sell Mercedes for a living, I work 7 days so I spanner in between dealing with customers.. But Sunday seems the best day for this.

So I came into work early and started on going over this car as best as I can..

This is the first day but there are many more things for next weekend planned!

List of parts:

Air Filters A2730940404
Oil Filter A0001802609
Spark Plugs x 16 A0031599403
Sealant for Rocker Covers A003989982010
Rocker Cover Breather Hoses A1120180382, A1120180209, A1179901578 x 3, A1120180182, A1120180282, A1120180482
Transmission Sump Gasket A1402710080 & Filter A1402770095 & Screw Plugs A1409904601, A0009976532, A1402710060
Transmission Plug A2035400253
Fuel Filter A0024773001
Front Indicator Lenses A4638260057
Wiper Blades A4638200145
Alloy Accelerator Pedal A1703000004, Alloy Brake Pedal A1702900182
Poly V Belt A0119979792
Auto Transmission Fluid ATF134, A001989680313
Water Pump OE Spec, Hepu Brand, 201220422
V Belt Tensioner - KWP OE Spec 326220290 & Idler Pulley 326220390

Change of Pedals, Very Important ;)

Leaking Rocker Covers as Usual on the M113, someone attempted this before but used the wrong sealant.

Key for this job is preperation... Clean it all up nice and get all that junk out of that rocker.

Breathers were blocked... cleaned them out... Use only MB Sealant.

Breather hoses will crack when you remove them so may as well change the complete set.

Very important job that gets over looked and not done properly. The transmission oil needs changing at least every 35K miles. I like to do it every 3-4 years as a matter of course. The fluid that came out was brown and burnt.

When Mercedes do this job they do not drain the torque convertor, even though this car has a plug. The TC holds most of the fluid.

Use only genuine MB fluid for this box and mine took over 8.5L to get it to correct level...

Geabox Pilot Bushing & Electrical Plug... Almost a service item these... This one had the original. The O rings that are supposed to stop ATF travelling up the wiring and into the ECU were literally broken... One fell into half and into the box which I removed with long nosed pliers. These must be changed on any car around the 1997- age with this box as they cause all sorts of issues if not attended to.

Indicators changed, mine were looking tired.

Also changed wiper blades and various small things. Changed Oil & Filter using MB filter and genuine MB Oil.

Changed and flushed Brake fluid... The old fluid was BLACK at the calipers!!

Changed all 16 Plugs, although done recently, the old ones were pretty tired looking. Thankfully more space to work in the G than on say my C43.

Discs, Pads all pretty much new.

Next week:

- Check/Change Axle Oils

- Find Fuel Filter?! Couldnt see it, removed cover by fuel tank only to find the pump.

- Replace Water Pump, Thermostat, V Belt, Belt Tensioner, V Belt Idler Pulley. Car runs a touch too hot for my liking.

- Find and grease all the grease points.

- Clean Underside and waxoyl thoroughly.

- Fix broken Phone Antenna or remove

- Try and fix wind noise from top of windscreen - maybe its the antenna or sunroof seal..

I think thats it...

Good write up.

The fuel filter is located in the centre of the vehicle on the LHS fixed to the inside of the chassis rails. I think there might be a protection plate below it. Don't forget the diff lock fluid.

Interested to read about the gearbox electrical connector. Where is that located?

Re: Getting to Know My Green Monster... A Full Service Done!

Hi All,

- Ian you should hang your head in shame... the alloy pedals is a MBClub UK official upgrade.. Alloy Accelerator Pedal A1703000004, Alloy Brake Pedal A1702900182..

As Eddie has kindly illustrated the electrical plug "pilot Bush" fits to the box and accepts the electrical plug from the cars ECU.

This unfortunately is a part that is known to fail and allows transmission fluid to migrate into the cars ECU causing all sorts of issues. Mine was most definitely the original as it had red seals and these havent been used since forever! They have revised the part many times now, so buy the latest part from the dealer rather than buying old stuff from ebay. Only around £20 UK.

Could someone please enlighten me on grease points and axle oils? Is there a manual on his site somewhere for that? I dont trust MB to provide the correct axle oils, I prefer to give them part numbers!!

Also Diff Lock Fluid? What is this? Sorry I know MB's pretty well but im a 4x4 newbie really... Didnt do that much to my last G..

Hi

Use some decent gear oil in diffs, trust me

Buy the best synthetic oil you can, obviously the higher the grade the more abuse it takes but its thick when cold

I put 80  100 ep in my axles

80 weight cold and 100 hot

I think standard is 75 90. ep is extreme pressure and there is also hypoid gear oil but most ep is fine

I use castrol, shell or morris lubricants for diffs. I have run morris oil in many cars and its been good with no wear on some high performance and race cars

Choice is yours

I think the diff locks use dot 4 brake fluid and i flushed mine and it was clean but some may contain a bit of rusty fluid. Never seen any issues with diff locks but someone might say otherwise

I gently pressure bled mine doing closest pipes first. There is a write up on bleeding diff locks somewhere . Check the plastic union that goes from hose to bottle and the seal. Mine is a bit poor but does not leak

Dont forget to grease your props and while you have your excellent camera skills . Is your prop from box to transfer box a cv joint or normal uj like on the other props

Happy g wagoning

Well if you are methodical it takes around two hours...

Lie all seats flat as possible to give you space to work...

Trickiest part is sunroof cover... This is tricky to remove without damaging and very fiddly to get it to refit properly... I had this trimmed first and set aside some time to put this back together...

Its a very large piece once removed, the trimmer had to come to me to do it!

Yes she is being very well cared for.

The old grey headlining was a nasty grey cloth that has yellowed... Tried cleaning several times and on the last occassion just decided to pull it out.

Last night she let me down though... front to rear brake pipe burst at the rear connection.,,,, so turned back to work to fit a new piece of pipe.. Not an easy job as the unions were totally fused together... Ended up cutting it all off and fitting new flexi pipe etc... Again lucky I had a suitable flexi pipe in stock as a matter of luck.
