Can anyone tell me what the oil volume is for the automatic gearbox on a 300GE.  The handbook doesn't include this information. Vehicle  serial no 079490.  I didn't measure the volume drained off.  Thanks.

Re: Gearbox oil volume on 300GE - info needed please

Hello,

On a 300GE: If you drain the complete system, you will require a little over  9 litres of oil. I have just done this and refilled with a synthetic oil Fuchs Titan 5000, but otherwise a Dexron-II or Dexron -III type oil will do.

To drain the torque converter you will need to open the access plug situated under the bell housing. Then, rotate the engines manually and SLOWLY until the drain plug aligns with the access hole. This is very tricky to do without help.

There is probably 3 or 4 litres that remain in the torque converter, so if you don't drain this separately, you will require less oil.  ... But you will only be changing about half of the oil. On the newer 'sealed for life' gearboxes (5 speed) there is no drain plug for the torque-converter and so this is what end up doing.

To check the oil level use the dip stick and take a measurement with the engine running and the gearbox in P. First, though, briefly move the gear lever through P N and D to ensure  no air in the system.

Re: Gearbox oil volume on 300GE - info needed please

From memory, with torque convertor drained the 300GE should take 6.5 Lts of oil. I would suggest pouring 6 Lts and add a little at a time checking at the dip stick.

After filling in some 6 Lts run the engine on idle and shift the gear lever in all gear selections slowly, allowing for oil follow in in each gear selected (Hand brake and foot brake applied during gear selection). Check the oil at the dip stick and fill as appropriate filling in between the minimum and maximum marks on the dip stick. Allow for the dip stick to sit in the tube for a few seconds before removing it and ensure the dip stick is maintained at the upright as you remove it to take the oil level reading. Take a second reading, wiping off the oil on the dip stick and repeat as instructed.

Final oil check should be done after a five mile run to allow the gear box oil to fully heat up to normal operating temperature hence would have expanded and giving a correct maximum dip stick reading. Prefer to keep the oil level just below the maximum mark on the dip stick; overfilling and overheating can cause for the oil in the gearbox to spill out of the tube and overflow onto the hot exhaust causing a big plum of smoke as though the engine may have blown. My appologises in advance if I am wrong on the oil level.

Thanks guys.  That seems to cover the subject pretty comprehensively.  Good tip about moving the selector through the gears.

With everything completely drained, including torque converter, oil cooler, pipes and hoses, the refill quantity was 8.6  litres to the  upper mark on the dip-stick at operating temperature.

If some oil remains in the pipes and oil cooler, then the refill quantity may be a bit less as Rakesh has mentioned.
