Hello,

Was seeking some advice and would appreciate any help from any of you on here.

I have a 98/99 Mercedes G500 which needs some work undertaking on it. I would like to use a garage who know Gwagens.

The list is attached below for a rough idea on price and to show the kind of work required to be undertaken.

I have contacted both the g glass center and all wheel drive but not had any joy from both. Although am in the trade and have contacts the car is my own personal runner and would like to take it to one place and be confident having all jobs done once and properly.

Best,

Right wing mirror ( not moving )
Wing mirror control panel loose
Sunroof and light control panel loose
Alpine headunit needs to be swapped simple to use (handfree iphone compatible/ connection )
Big Service - including windscreen wiper blades

Heating and air con temperamental - been fixed again but intermittent

Suspension - (shock absorbers been changed at some stage and are hard - standard ones to be used )
Want Reverse beepers (last ones were very loud and high pitch so removed)
New tyres all round.
TOAD central locking system - replace with standard Mercedes system
Body work, repair and spray where needed - also all paint all wheels due to corrison
Often feels like cool air coming through doors...
If possible to upgrade the headlights to xenon
Steering to be looked at ( slight play )

I'm sure folks can give you recommendations, I know I can, but it would be helpful if we knew where you are. If you were in John o'Groats, a recommendation in Lands End wouldn't be much good smiley

Re: G500 Garage Recommendation...

First - Please read this post

http://www.gwoa.co.uk/content/please-read-g-class-centre-malvern-worcest...

Second - It would help (as pointed out by the Honorable member from Cambs) where you are located?

Third - My take on your works:

Right wing mirror ( not moving ) - This could be a motor problem or a short in the wires either way you may need to replace or re-splice the wires, has ot ever worked since you had the G?
Wing mirror control panel loose - Are you talking about the control buttons in the centre?
Sunroof and light control panel loose - Any water ingress from the sun roof? If so it could be bubbling rust forcing the clips away - or a simple situation that it needs clipping back in to place?
Alpine headunit needs to be swapped simple to use (handfree iphone compatible/ connection ) - I would suggest that you contact a specialist in sterio/mobile installations - I have a great place in High Wycombe, fair priced and very neat. Great choice of equipment as well
Big Service - including windscreen wiper blades - A or B service?

Heating and air con temperamental - been fixed again but intermittent - This could be a complete new motor - do a search on the forum for some ideas. Be warned it is a bigger than you think job to do so - if you can post p your VIN number the powered here can identify the correct units? If your wiring on the RHS wing mirror needs doing then it may be worth considering them at the same time?

Suspension - (shock absorbers been changed at some stage and are hard - standard ones to be used ) - It could be the springs that have gone? Cheaper solution and will improve ride quality - they do break easiliy and its a common item that needs changing over time.
Want Reverse beepers (last ones were very loud and high pitch so removed) - Do you have the bumper sensors still in place? A simple wad of cotton wool over the reversing speaker will help on this front!
New tyres all round.  - What type you looking for? AT? OR or Road?
TOAD central locking system - replace with standard Mercedes system
Body work, repair and spray where needed - also all paint all wheels due to corrison  - Wheels drop Gordon a PM (PXwheels) he does a good job on refurbing
Often feels like cool air coming through doors... How old are the door seals in the G? they could need replacing?

If possible to upgrade the headlights to xenon  - Be warned you will have to beef up the existing looms etc to carry the extra power for xenons
Steering to be looked at ( slight play ) - maybe a slight opera could be looked at?

It will cost a fortune if you go to MB - however you will have a) a 2 year warranty on parts, and b) it will extend to a consequential loss on the other parts. Eg you Change a part and it fails within two year that has a knock on effect on something else you get both fixed for free. (Please check with your local dealer on that).

You can source official parts through our Parts rep - Gav Helme, who does an excellent job getting those hard to get parts.

In answer on whom to use: Personally I have been well looked after by G Wagen on caversham - but I know some members have not, I have also been very well looked after by Chris at Columbia Motors up North - Knows his trade and knows G's very well!

Let us now how you get on

Re: G500 Garage Recommendation...

I would recommend Alan Gibson of Gibson Autos. his web promotes mainly Landrovers but he is also very knowledgeable on G wagons. In fact he competes  in off road comps in a G.

He used to service one of the members G500

Down side he is based in Ayr Scotland but I am sure he would be happy to run you to an Airport in Glasgow.

Will need to do some more research, but I think some have fitted these to G's.

Totally agree with the above. Have not used him, but have had quite a few conversations with him. Obviously knowledgeable and skilled.

Give Raj Sing a call. I will PM you his details.

He had done wonders on my 2001 G500, and very reasonable too. Engine strip and check, new roll bars, new fuel pump the list is endless!

Based in NW london
