I am quite interested in the 320 CDI that George has for sale. I would be interested in opinions as to how it will match up to my expectations.  I have owned G300 G300D G300 turboD briefly a G500.i know that the soundtrack will not be great but if anyone has experience of the model how does it perform? I did aim to buy a G400 but post 2005 models are rare and even in Germany seem to carry huge miles.

Re: G320

As it happens I drove the truck at the weekend, it makes my 300TD feel a bit like an old tractor. Having owned a  500 I thought the 320 pulls the truck along just as well. The engine is smooth with plenty of low down torque.

Go and have a test drive Bruce.  I will be surprised if your disappointed.

Thanks Howard, I am hoping to get some photos this evening so a test drive next week is the plan.

Re: G320

I have a 2008 G320CDI bought new from Austria but made for the UK (ie speedo in mph etc).

Doesn't have the performance of my CL500 (!) but goes pretty well, fine locally, A roads, towing, hills etc, not a high speed motorway basher - I had expected it to be quieter/happier at say 90mph, it will do it but doesn't feel kind..

22mpg motorway, 25mpg pottering locally

Cheers Mike

Re: G320

Yes I have test driven the car and it performs well, I am fairly sure that I will buy it, same colour as my Dicovery 4 so it meets the approval of her indoors.

Re: G320

Wishing you much fun with your new G.

There are a few minor things to be aware about that engine:

Thanks Arnie, it's a nice truck from a really good home where it has been well looked after.Any advice on prevention?

Re: G320

You may not have any issues, but I think most of them were down to the rubber seal-material that many of the seals on the engine were manufactured from. The upgrade seal kits are manufactured from Viton rubber and coloured purple to differentiate them from the original orange coloured seals.

I think one other upgrade included a larger oil-sump as some people were experiencing sludging of the oil, with the extended service intervals on this engine. However, if you use a good quality synthetic oil and change the oil and filter every year or 10,000 miles, you won't have a problem there.

some information is available here:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/363973-journey-into-infamous-om642-oil-cooler-leak-2.html

Anyway, if it's been running fine all these years no reason to worry about any problems now, but just to be aware. It's a great engine with plenty of power and torque, almost as much torque and power as the preceding 400Cdi.

The engine features can be found here:

Re: G320

Lots of lovely clean oil then, no problem there as I always keep oil fresh. Maybe an oil flush clean too every three changes?

Re: G320

It is actually very hard to describe the feeling on contentment, the Range Rover and discovery 4 are very nice and do the job but shutting a G Wagen door is a truly unique feeling. The car is a credit to the Freeman family.
