Hi All

Heres a possibly good or boring chat

I have a had a landrover but always wanted a g wagon. In fact all off roaders really i have owned, All cheap or knackers i have rectified

I have been advised to post my full g wagon experience lol

I am good at english but repeat myself and use crap punctuation . Please log out now if its boring already

Here goes my full g history

I bought a 463 g wagon. Not mint but ok with 180000 miles on it. I have a good engineering background and welding and bodywork is not a problem. I dont mind scratches but dents and poor mechanics are not acceptable to me

I decided my 300 om603 was poorly and sent the head off to be done as it was the later number head that was good. It came back and i fitted it and the g would only just run. These guys were expert mercedes engine rebuilders that are supposed to be the best. They do marine engines for people at sea. Im glad im on land . The injector seats they fitted pissed out and i had to make shims for them to get it to run. I thought it was good when i had fixed their expensive best deal head. i knew i should of done it myself but did not have the special sockets i have now got

The om603 was good but only if revved and poor on fuel

My first issue was the vibration from the drivetrain

I checked the rear propshaftt and it seemed good but i decided to strip it down and i got 2 joints from norfolk with my daughter on an exciting day out. They were very helpful, In fact too much. The guy said have you a remer to check yolks. I said yes i could get one . Dont worry he said i wil do the yolks for you. I was happy but not happy. He was as rough as arseholes and i wish he never touched my propshaft. I bit my tongue for his sake and left for home

I fitted new non circlip joints and tig welded some spacers i made to hold them in. BORED YET? remember this bit

Fitted prop and it was a better g. On the old joint 3 cups were as new but one was like a rusted stump. When i pressed it out i thought this is not my troubles until the last cup and it was so knackered i could not believe it made it home for a 300 mile trip

CSo my g had a shit head rebuild but prop was good.Did all the radius arm bushes and shocks on raer which made it even better. I then replaced all bushes on panhard rod and all axle bushes

Passengers thought car was smooth but it was not perfect to me

I wanted an om 606 engine as they are good and rev well

Bought a 300td merc with om 606 motor for 280 quid as a test engine and donor car. Fitted engine and lost many parts and had to ebay some more. My garage is not so tidy but jobs come out good

Had someone do wiring in ecu and help me a lot. I wanted to keep the original key from e300 and all electronics so it was proper. It was up and running and was good all but a miss fire at tickover. I had made a flywheel pick up but i went off the angled rpm sensor for the rev counter . What a muppet. This made my mods 2 mm wrong and the sensor it should of had could not sense the crank speed all the time. I was not going to take the gearbox or engine out so i made an adaptor for the front pulley and drilled and pegged it so it could sense the 6 pick up points. Its now perfect

I rarely come out of top gear and fuel economy is twice as good as the 603

Next issue is the propshafts. I bought 3 new ones. They checked mine and said it was good and just needed a balance. Shit luck there i thought but they were impressed at what i had done and after many questions how i got it true i was advised to keep it as  spare. lol.

Their props are ace and have easy to change diy joints with simple clips

Final part

My g is now good with lots of torque and power. It whizzes along and is good on fuel and very smooth to drive

It still had a slight vibration

I deducted as sherlock holmes as the rear propshaft uj had been knackered for so long it could of damaged rear axle bearings

So i stripped axle. Bear in mind when i first bought the g i checked it over and one rear axle wheel bearing had a slight amount of play. When i checked them after engine swap and another 5000 miles both had play even though it was slight. I might of missed a bit here and my om606 is not standard now as i have tuned it a lot so its got lots of power now

I stripped rear axle and bearings were perfect. A pal who works in a science lab said he would check the old oi to see if it was still good. It came back good for wear properties, 75% good for corrosion 80 %for heat ranges and 80% for oil metal particules . Meaning it was on the good side for all tests not metal particules were 85% metallic

I loked at the

I looked at the axle and though for ages. The only way the wheels could have slight play is in the drive gear spider gear set up of the diff . I checked the drive gears an both were good but the casings were odd measurements. My mind was spinning. No help anywhere and no data available

I machined out casings of axle and fitted some bushes so i could change them in the future or do pretty much what i wanted. I just gave them a close clearance for oil and rebuilt it all with new bearings and seals

Now its mint with no vibration at all. Im sure it would of been like this from new

Awesome any questions just ask. I now have a silk smooth g with no vibration thats good on fuel and goes well

After much searching and work im now a happy g owner

Ive given it some stick and its ace. It was good from day one but now its ace

Sorry if you nodded off but it will interest some g owners lol

Interesting story. well done!  i've got a SWB 460, and have pulled the M110 engine out to fit an OM606 like you did.

Where abouts are you in the UK?

cheers
