Just looking for confirmation that 230 petrol generally considered weak engine in G? G for sale currently seems very well serviced/maintained to 125k (with new head at 108k) but I have been on the search for a diesel.

Grateful of any thoughts.

Re: G230 Weaker Engine

Hi

230 E engine is a fine one. Just depends what use you intend. It doesn't have a lot of low down torque, so not the ideal choice for towing. I ran a 230GE for 7 years and I was generally happy with it. Sweet running unit, reasonably economical by the standards of  G,  and a reasonable turn of speed.

Good luck.

I was of the same opinion until I was persuaded by another member to buy one. The 230GE is very similar in all characteristics to the 300GD. Much the same pulling power and fuel consumption, but quieter and smoother. And it drinks considerably less juice than a 280GE. 4 or 5 speed manual would be more fun than auto.

Should be on your list. Drive one if you get a chance.

Eddie.

Same thoughts as Leo and Eddie

I have owned  and drove both the 230and 280 and 300d the 230 is a very smooth engine and not near a thirsty as a 280 as i ran a 280 for a few 3 or 4 years getting 12 to 15 MPG and 22 to 25 mpg on the 230 and i found the 300 slower and very similar Mpg

But it depends on what you are using it for and if it for use around a farm / Crofters blush AS you cant buy red petrol LOL

Give more details on here about the car and someone on here will know the car

More important  read the buying advice thread as well

Re: G230 Weaker Engine

Hi Santacruz,

where are you and what will you want to do with your G? The 230 from speaking to a number of past owners will do the job of carting the G around, but very low MPG and you will need a good run up if you were going to over take something tricky, like pedestrians or cyclists.... laugh

I do know from experience that two melded into one can give you one of the best engines in the G range as you would then have a 500, V8 which is more than adequate for any G related fun, and is a great work horse. Please heed the warnings that Phone man has given and take a good look at the sticky section on the forum. As has been posted let us know what information you have, and I am sure that someone on here will know it. Do you mind if I ask where you are getting it from? Please feel free to PM me the answer if your shy or worried that someone may try and out bid you for it.

Regards

Re: G230 Weaker Engine

Hi,

Drove all sorts of G included 300gd, 280, 270cdi , have been driving the 500 and the 230 every day for last 9 years ...... 230 every day is my final say ..        :-)     It will put a smile on your face every time . Love the V8 but the 230 will stay in the house for a long time where the V8 has to go.

Re: G230 Weaker Engine

Thanks all for the advice. My useage is largely urban but occasional 100-150 motorway miles. I am patient and subscribe to the G state of mind on 3-lanes

Spider thanks I'll PM you
