Hi Guys

I am after a mint g wagon

I love mine to bits but i will either sell it or the wife wants it

I am looking at japanese imports

Do people know if they did a rhd short wheel base g400cdi for japan

If not i need or would like a g463 swb diesel in right hand drive and preferably manual

I dont care about engine as long as body and chassis are mint. I would just convert to om 606td but would love a v8 diesel as the best choice

Anyone who knows the models they made would be of great help and much appreciated in my search

Oh another question as i dont live g wagons i just end up repairing them is. What year did the non mechanical locking axles come in??? Was it around 2005 with the diff locks linked to traction control

Any info would be very much appreciated

                                  Cheers Guys and Girls

Re: g wagon 400cdi

The 400 Cdi was never manufactured in RHD (steering could not be adapted to fit in tight engine bay) and together with the fact that people in Japan buy relatively few Diesels, I think that would be a rare machine to find from Japan - albeit in LHD. Not impossible, but difficult.

There are plenty of G500, G55,  G320 and G300, G350D however, and a few of the later G350Cdi

The G-wagen has always had mechanical locking axles. Since the W463 (1990), the system was electrically controlled through push-buttons, rather than directly by pull-up, hydraulic knobs, but the electrics operate vacuum valves, which operate the hydraulics. On the axles, it's the same.

Since 2001, the transfer case lost its direct lever operation in favour of a motorised actuator and a small switch. This can be more problematic.

ESP was introduced in around 2002 and 4-ETS (traction control) was introduced in around 2005, but as far as I know it's just trickery with the ABS system and does not replace the locking diffs.

'...Traction control is achieved using ETS (Electronic Traction System). This employs the ABS system with additional valves to monitor and then partially brakes any wheel which loses traction. This much simpler system is also featured in the Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV.....''

ESP on the G-Wagen can be problematic and requires re-programming if the wheel or tyres sizes are changed. There are reports that it intervenes too early, reducing engine power when you want it.

I don't think that any vehicle after year 2000 would be suitable for engine conversion, unless you like to work with a myriad of CANbus control systems.

Re: g wagon 400cdi

I should perhaps add, that when importing a car from Japan (or other non EU), consider whether it is pre Y registration or year-2000, when the new bands of road-tax, based on CO2  g/km, came in.  If first registered in the EU (incl UK) before March 2006, then the lower band applies where a 400Cdi would be £295 instead of £505 per year. Therefore, if you import a G300 from, say 1997, you will pay road tax at the pre-CO2-banded, fixed rate of £295, as there are no official CO2 g/km figures for these. Any later model G-Wagen, from 2000 onwards is likely to pay the full £505, as there are CO2 figures available for these and the (first) registration would be post 2006. Unfortunately, I don't think that they count the first registration date in japan, as they would, say, if  importing a 2002 car from Germany or any other EU country.

here is an example:

Lovely car, low miles, no rust, but annual tax is £505:

Re: g wagon 400cdi

Priceless info

Thanks Arnie

Now i need a swb manual diesel up to year 1999 in rhd

I would be happy with a 1996 if one came up as long as body is mint and chassis

I will do another 606td conversion on it as mine is nice and given no trouble in 30000 miles

Re: g wagon 400cdi

Mercedes themselves can give you the date of manufacture from your vin code, they'll charge you £25 but it comes on embossed paper but useful for a cat delete on a pre '92 car

Re: g wagon 400cdi

Hi

A big thanks to jason gds and all for guidance

He made me think straight. Why do i need another g wagon??. I have done all mods on mine and it is perfect all but sunroof wont stop where it should and rear washer does not work. I could sort this but its not been on my priority list

All its mechanicals are rebuilt and its going just fine. I will replace gearbox with a later 6 speed anytime soon now i know its all working well and fits neatly. I bought a cheap box that had done many miles just to see if it all worked well. It does. Revs are a touch higher. 2500 at 50 mph on the sat nav but as the om 606td likes to rev its fine. Its also right in boost on gearchanges at moderate driving and is a bit better on fuel but hardly noticable. In fact thats bullshit as i dont measure it accurately at all.I love driving my g wagon and dont really care about fuel consumption if its acceptable
