G models and major component types
Found this schedule and thought that it might be useful to compare the major components across the G range
Hi Roly,
Thanks for posting, though (as usual) I have some silly questions to ask! Looking at the 500's I see different ranges for the engine:
Roly,
Being a complete engine novice and a 463 owner I found this a really useful document and have stored it away.
My Vin Number is WDB 46322827095800 registered 27/5/1994 which I believe makes it one of the later RHD 463's.
It is badged a G300 rather than a 300G so the 3.0 petrol is a 103.987 with a 4 speed 722.397 auto gearbox?
(Hopefully Sherlock is back from Tipperary and will be able to advise ....lets see some photos Gavlar as it sounds like an epic road trip...)
I also see that the 463.308 has the 606.964 Diesel Engine which presumably would have only been a factory option in the LHD G300's ?
Would also be interested if there is any option on the G300 463 for a 5 Speed autobox....I've probably asked this before as well...
Finally......................some really great threads and pictures on the forum lately.
Regards
Tim
Spider - Here's my take on these figures:
113.962: early G500 engine (5.0)
113.982 early G55 (non-kompressor 5.5)
113.993 later G55 (kompressor)
Latest G500 engine is M273 I think, 5.5L.
M103.987 was the old 300GE/G300 petrol engine, which was available with manual, unlike the M113s.
The very early 500GEs had the M117 engine according to Google :)
The numbers after the 46X are very useful for wheelbase and fuel type:

Tim,
Yours is a proper late car - not just registered late but actually produced late, as many of the 1993 (K-reg) ones were still built in 1991 but only sold to the general public a couple of years later.
For comparison a 300GE from 1991 (H-reg) has a VIN that ends in 76xxx so yours is about 20,000 vehicles later ~ 2 years of production.
The badging switched from XXX GE to G XXX in model year 1994 but the G300 petrols are a very limited series as they were soon replaced by the 320 (M104) in 1995, except for those still assembled in Indonesia which I think were made till 1996/7.
You are right with the engine/transmission numbers, the 5-speed auto starts with 722.6 and wasn't available with the 300 (M103) engine as far as I recall.
M2dxb,
Thanks for that it puts logic into my thoughts............... a really useful link that I am sure others will benefit from.
What were the 722.6 auto boxes built for?
Tim
Sure you're most welcome, I in turn thank Harald for mining this information out of the many folders he has on the G.
From that document (and wikipedia):
The first G320 (1995-1996) had the M104 inline 6 with 722.3 4-speed auto.
Later G320s (1997) used the V6 M112 engine with 722.6 5-speed auto. This was also the transmission used on all other Gs of that era (G500/55 petrol, G270/300/400 Diesel).
This transmission for most of the early 2000s was the most common transmission MB used, available on all the following:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_5G-Tronic_transmission#Applic...
Back to the G, the 7-speed auto (722.9) was introduced in 2006/7 with the new 5.5 V8 engine (M273), as Mercedes tend to bundle new engines/transmissions together. The 722.6 however continued in the 55 AMG versions because the 7-speed could not handle all the torque.
When AMG moved to the 63 engine (actually a 6.2! Codename M156) they also ditched the 5-speed auto in favour of the new 7-speed. In 2013 they introduced the 9-speed auto but who knows when it will show up in the G.
