Driving down the road today on my way to mucking out the horses when loud crash from rear of wagen.....

Both straps holding the plastic fuel tank up have corroded through and decided to collapse in unison!! Has anyone had this happen and are replacement straps and possibly the fuel tank shield available? I do have a friend who may, as an alternative, be able to make up replacements in stainless steel so it wont happen again!

Any suggestions appreciated.

Wagen is a W463 G500 SWB 1999.

Re: Fuel Tank Straps.....

If you want to reattach fuel tank guard, you will also need the mounts for this as I presume they have corroded to nothing( tank straps pass through them).Unfortunately reckon stuff collects under guard making it rot away silently. You could get stainless ones made up, think MB ones about £35 each?

At least no tank damage!

Thanks Gav - very helpful as always!

Will chat it through with my friend to see what price he could do stainless straps for and whether the old shield is re-usable....

Re: Fuel Tank Straps.....

Gordon,

dimensions of a 463 strap are 30 mm wide, about 1.5mm thick,

from end of tank strap ( hook ) to end of threaded rod 688mm, bottom of hook to start of threaded rod 577mm, these were off part no 463 470 03 40.

145mm length of fixing ( 8mm threaded bar)

Any different to a 460?

Was going to wrap new ones in Denso tape to prevent rust!!

Re: Fuel Tank Straps.....

Hi

The 460 series and 463 series with a Plastic Tank use the same Strap A463 470 03 40

The 460 series with a Steel Tank use a different number A460 470 01 40

Don't think they are they same?

Re: Fuel Tank Straps.....

Hi Folks

Guess what

My g was parked and i knew id spilt a bit of oil and diesel when doing mods

Came home and my g was dripping diesel on floor

Hose had pulled loose on tank. Lucky no damage just about a gallon of fuel lost. I cable tied pipe then had to go away for weekend.

This is why im here now

Thought no way should that pipe be that close to flexi hoses. Yes i assumed tank had dropped down

Got under it today and both straps had snapped. Rustworms had nibbled through the buggers

Ive looked at pics on the link above in a previous post but my parts look nothing like the parts listed. Is this just poor drawings

Ive made some stainless straps but the metal pads that are about 3inches by 8 inches are rusty and the bolts have sheared which hold the tank guard on

Has anyone the part numbers for the plates i need that go under tank straps, or a parts drawing

Im in no rush and if they are stupid money i will make some

Heres another one

The plastic tank has a fuel pipe with nut at the bottom of tank. I need a new pipe and if they are cheap i will buy one rather than make one. Any info much appreciated

Cant believe weve posted the same thing within 2 hours. Its an easy fix just many bolts to remove. I did not bodge mine and took great care but i did not fully remove bumper. I cut off old thread on old tank straps and removed bumper bolts with mudflaps and carefully lifted bumper to get to tighten new brackets i made using a ratchet spanner

Re: Fuel Tank Straps.....

Advise note to the forum:

This is the second incident of tank straps corroding within a few months of each other; let that pattern be a matter of concern to the rest of owners' or at the least put your minds at rest.

Please consider it of some importance to have your tank straps examined and replaced as matter of preventative maintenance.

Tank straps should be a matter for the annual MOT inspection but it has become apparent that cases are going off unchecked or reported. At your next service make this a point to your garage or personal mechanic to check thoroughly the condition of the tank straps and  have a report on it In particular, to properly check the strap ends on the inside end of the straps.

From those who have had these failures, photos of the strap could show where the weak point is to the rest of members.
