Fuel tank sender unit on 460
Fuel gauge continuously registers full on a 280GES since tank out reconditioning. I have removed the sender but it is not entirely clear how to dismantle this without irreparably damaging something. On tilting the unit, the sliding float inside does seem to move freely. There seem to be no screws or nuts to undo. I have noted that Gav said the sender can easily be reconditioned in answer to the "463 dash fault" topic. Anyone got any hints as to whether the aluminium tube unscrews or pulls off from the top (I don't want to force it the wrong way) or do I prise off the circular fitting at the bottom. Any hints welcome from someone who has done this.
Are you sure the wires are not just on the wrong way around?
Not seen a 460 steel tank sender for a while but the later plastic tank and 463 sender has a small (maybe 7mm) nut at the bottom and once undone the tube slides off to leave the guts...
Will try to post a pic later...

Gav is correct about the 463 , 7mm nut slide off the tube, but go very gently, very fragile float mechanism on them, assuming it similar on a 460?
Good job...let us know what fixes it...
The nut on the 463 (plastic tank) Sender is different and just a plain 7mm nut the is sat out in the open and just requires a socket.
Other than that the inner components look very similar... those fine wires break for fun...
Gav
460 is the same as that clubwagen document.
Those wires are fragile... you can get away with soldering them if you break them where the wire does not slide through the moving float.
Fantastic - Thanks Steve. The key phrase is the one about sealant covering the nut at the end. This is why I couldn't see any way of dismantling the thing - the sealant needs to be removed first.
