I dont know wether any of you have used this company before but I used them quite a bit when rebuilding my old Jag S Type www.frost.co.uk is their site but a point of interest is that they do a product called POR15
http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8223
My mate has an E Type and just used the same system on his leaky fuel tank It is bloody marvelous, it completely lined the inside with a protective skin as well as sealed a few "pin holes"
I have ordered a complete fuel tank sealing system for about £45 I will be doing the G in the summer as at the moment I have no signs of leaking but want to keep it that way.
The same range supplies all manner of paints for external use too

Leaks

If you'd sprayed it with oil twice a year it wouldn't have corroded in the first place Greeney!

is the lowerst form of wit.... but I smiled. :D
It has nt rusted yet but I wanted to keep it that way as I know they do...
I am going to take it all off in the summer and repaint it all externally and use this POR15 stuff internally.

Some professional help

There once was a chap called Greeney,
Who wasn’t into anything greasy.
No old oil for this 4x4 machine,
He’ll strip off and cover it in POR 15.
His tank was still rusting,
But he wasn’t budging.
So with leaks and drips,
He took his own tips.
Always acting professionally,
He decided to try it intestinally.

Now Greeney, remember the label,
If you drink it you’ll become unstable.
For your tank it is intended,
Inside you is not recommended.
I don’t want to be sarcastic,
But you’d have been better with plastic.
No more Iron Oxide,
Just a few pounds more for your pride.
Please take this suggestion from John
And file it under environmentally friendly idea No1.

Just in case, any of you didn't understand the last 2 comments of John and Rustbucket
I will translate

Johns last comment was
"I might come over to your house for a talk"

And Rustbuckets last comment was
"Your'e welcome any time, but remember and not leave any of that black oily stuff you squirt under you G or I will tell Greeney about you. You will know it is me by the rusty back door on my G,,,,"

 Ma breeks ur drookit ! You'll need to ask the wife that one. It's pronounced pennycook, in fact this is how it was spelled many moons ago ( is that the right spelling for spelled or is it spelt  ) and it means cuckoo on the hill. Suppose it all makes sense to you now.

POR 15

This is a question for Greeny I guess, unless anyone else has used POR15.

I have just removed the tank (to replace the exhaust) and will be using some POR15 on it in the next couple of days. However my question is. There is a mesh filter inside the tank. Seems to be no way of getting it out. So, I’m concerned that the POR15 will block this filter. Any ideas? Anyone used this stuff?

As an aside I’ve ended up replacing the exhaust myself. Didn’t however fancy scrabbling under it myself so went to a local LR specialist (who I know vaguely) and asked him if he would do it. Guessed he would be used to fighting with rusty nails. Well the look the on his face was a picture as soon as I mentioned G Wagen. You would have thought I had kicked him where it hurts!
Anyway he was booked up for 3 weeks. Good business to be in fixing LR’s obviously!
So booked it in with a semi-retired guy. No VAT etc (you get the picture). All was OK until the day I was to take it over. He rang my wife and (he’s a cantankerous old git) told her he couldn’t be bothered. If it had been a diesel he would have done it but petrol’s use too much fuel so it wasn’t worth bothering with. Bizarre!

Anyway the exhaust is nearly done. Stainless from Rimmer Brothers. Great quality. No fighting to make it fit. It would appear the original exhaust was still on it, not bad for 18 years! Only minor crush injuries where it fell on me!

What a mesh!!

Well Russ I dont know really. I havent done mine yet although it is sitting in the garage waiting for the summer..Is it reachable can you mask it in any way? I used it on my Jag and it is quite thick stuff. consistancey of double cream. so it is possible it might block a fine gauze.
The tank has to be ultra clean too so you cant even put a barrier oil on it incase it drops into the tank body. what about a rubberised glue like copydex once the paint has "gone orf" you might be able to peel it off or even smear it in silicone sealer as paint hates this stuff and nothing will stick to it. SORRY I am waffing, thinking out loud.
Tell me how you get on though

Cheers Greeny. It's drying off at the moment after de-greasing it. I think I will just have to be carefull how I slop it around. The filter is not accessable (with my hands anyway).

Will let you know the out come. BTW great place Frosts. Thanks.

Snows back and I've got a G in bits...........................doh!

POR 15

Well it's done and it seems to have worked. Closed up some pin holes (exposed when I ground off exterior rust). Just for good measure once I had ground off all the exterior rust I treated the rust with the stuff that comes with the POR15 kit and then covered the bottom half of the tank with fibre glass. Takes for ever to de-grease, rinse, dry, treat rust, rinse, dry again and then wait 72hrs for the stuff to go off. Plumbed a fan heater to it in order to speed the process up but still a long job.

When trying to start it after refitting the tank the fuel pump gave up the ghost though. A few seconds of running it dry must have finished it off. I had only put about 5.5 litres in to the tank and this is not enough to provide sufficent flow to the pump. I knew it was pretty worn so I guess this was as good a time as any for it to fail. £75 from the local Bosch agent, seems to be a pretty common part so they keep them in stock.

Then when I did get it going it would only run on five cylinders. Moment of panic as i though I had managed to contaminate the fuel distibutor (if that happens I understand it could be scrap). Turned out one of the plugs had fouled up due to the prolonged churning and partial running before full fuel pressure / flow had arrived.

Anyway good stuff, and if you have a reasonably good tank to start with or as a preventative measure worth the effort/money. :D

Well it's always useful to have a couple of spare cylinders! Was a bit guttless though.

Happen to have a soft spot for 5's though. Especially if they have on over sized turbo attached (early audi quattro's) Need an egg timer to measure the lag...............but fun when it does light up!
Wife's VW/Audi TDi 5 goes like stink and sounds great. Shame audi gave up on them though.

Had a five cyl passat for a while, and I have to admit it went and sounded great! (but ground clearance was lousy and couldn't get mud terrrains small enough to fit ......)
