I have just butchered my front seat bases as I have fitted the recaros at last SO if anyone wants the old cloth and foams you are welcome to them (TAN LARGE CHECK) they are as worn as most of that age but may be useful for repairs etc. the drivers is the only torn one along the edge where one rolls in and out. I only have one headrest too as i used the other in the middle of the back seat.

Bases????

Greeney,

How did you solve the problem of the seat bases when fitting your Recaros?

I removed the trim which is easy as it slots into tracking. Then I cut off the wings that are welded to to the bottom frame and that attach the back squab. this leaves a tubular frame that fitted neatly into the recaro seat frames. I bolted these into place using nylok nuts. The drivers was harder as it has the squab height adjuster on it so I needed to add a bit of extra angle steel to the recaro frame as it held it at a different angle. actually a similar angle to about 3/4 raised up on the adjustment.
The only thing I wasnt over the moon with was the fact my chunky rugby legs now rub the bottom of the steering wheel when I get in and out. but a slightly smaller steering wheel will correct this and that was already on my to buy list. about 3hr job start to finish. I was pleased with the way the original seats just slid off the runners once the stopping screw was removed.

Recaros

I got them from ebay they come off a Ford and are still in the black cloth with recaro badge on them but when i get round to the retrim they will be in hide.
I have tried the image thing but it doesnt seem to work for me for some reason..
The foams are quite flat to be honest they have lost the shape of the backs but alot of the shaping is done using material in the cover. you are very welcome to them for free as the rest of the covers otherwise they are going to be scrapped as they are in my workshop.
Have you tried making your own foams.. good quality foam can be shaped with one of those electric files.

Foams

Looks like I may have to try and mould my own, went to my local MB dealer today to price new ones, they wont sell the foams seperate!!!! you must buy the whole bottom of the seat......wait for it...for £391.00 plus Vat each.......I dont think so!!!!!!!!!!!
The chap I have doing all my body work etc.. says he thinks an MGB seat foam is similar. Ill try that too!!

Cheers anyway

Try an electric carving knife (remember those from the 'eighties? ) to cut "firm" foam to size/shape.

Also - I may be interested in some of the cloth - similar 'roll-out' wear & tear - plus kids - equals some renovation needed!
