front hub
Hi ,I am wondering if I have to change the front hub on my 300gd if its not the bearing as newly fitted and adjusted and still have play ,does any other mercedes hub fit ? or has anyone recently got one because of similar problem ?Can anyone point me in the right direction please
There are usually two causes of play, which should not require replacement of the hub. If the inner bearing race is a good fit on the hub-shaft, the hub should be fine.
Applying the brakes will limit movement of the hub, so any play that can be felt will be due to the king-pin bearings. There is a packing procedure, for the king-pin bearings, using shims to set the pre-load. Likewise, any play felt that goes away when applying the brakes is likely to be due to the wheel bearings.
The wheel bearings are set using the hub-nuts. However, you must ensure that you have fitted the correct bearings.
This is for a 453, but similar
I agree with Arnie and suspect its the swivel pins.
Yes, if you have changed the king-pin bearings, there is no guarantee that the original shims will work with the new bearings. Check this because you can probably fix this problem - if indeed that is the issue - with less effort than dismantling the whole lot again for the wheel bearings.
Hi
Check the posts i sent you in the first instance. If you dont get it please feel free to ask
Putting foot on brake will help play in wheel bearing but make no difference to swivel bearings as i said
Re read it and do the checks and im sure all will be fine
I have all the spares you would need but you 99% definitly will not need any

..... So would be adding or subtracting shims on the king pins to take away the up and down movement ,if this was the case or is it trial and error ? ...
Thanks
This will give you an idea of the procedure. It involves clamping the pins, without shims, to the point where there is no significant movement and then using a feeler gauge to determine the required shim thickness.

With the wheels on you will have more leverage and that might be why you notice the play more.
A quick test, may be to remove the existing shims, and then re-tighten the top and bottom bolts slowly to see if the play disappears.
By my understanding you have only renewed the drive shaft bearings and not at all the king pin bearings. Am I right?
If that is the case it is your king pin bearings that are worn hence your play.

How much of a play have you got?
There are two types of bearing. I think it's the inner one.
The hub/shaft should not wear as the only contact surfaces are through the bearings. If you have axial play, which reduces with actuating the brakes, then that indicates an issue with the hub/shaft bearings. it may be that you have fitted the wrong bearing set or fitted it incorrectly (chamfer, as noted, above).
There is a manual on the website

Hope this helps

Hi , Thanks for your time , So would be adding or subtracting shims on the king pins to take away the up and down movement ,if this was the case or is it trial and error ? The movement is up and down and more exaggerated with the wheel on .What do you suggest ?
Thanks
