Hello,

As my front differential isn't in good condition anymore, I would like to buy another one.

It is for a 300GE W463 1990. At this moment, the differential makes a lot of noise. I have replaced all the bearings but it didn't helped.

Somebody knows where I can get one? Maybe a complete front axle from a 300 GE for sale?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Karel

Re: Front differential 300GE

Hi

Thanks Jason for your faith

On to diff problem

Has the axle ever been run low on oil???

You say you have replaced all bearings etc

I need to know all this info as it is not viable to rebuild a diff with a worn crownwheel and pinion

Did you blue print the gear mesh to ensure perfect mesh??

What noises does the differential make

If gears look perfect i am sure we can sort the job and have a perfect axle for many kms

If it has had no oil starvation and gears look good i am sure it will be fine

All i need is some close up pics of crown wheel and pinion to asses any wear on the parts before  i make a judgement to whether it will do 10000 km or 300000k after rebuild

                                  Regards G

Re: Front differential 300GE

Thank you for you answers. I'll try to respond as good as possible.

I don't know if the axle has been running low on oil because I bought the G this summer and she was already making the noise.

I thought it was only a bearing replacement but it didn't helped.
When I opened the axle, one of the homokenetic seals was broken. So the oil from the axle and the grease from the homokenetic were not  seperated anymore. Maybe this could be a cause but I would doubt it. I replaced all the seals but it didn't got better. Now the only thing I can think what could be the problem, is the differential.
Pictures below.

Excuse me for the bad language.

Re: Front differential 300GE

I cant tell from pics but did the gears get hot. I need closer pics of gears

On the pinion shaft is the bearing race blue from heat or is it just the picture

If you did not use a new collapsable spacer and just tightened propshaft flange nut it seems bearings were too tight and would only last a few hundred miles

Was it silent when you first rebuilt it for the first 50 miles or so?????

If it has not got too hot gears should be fine and it needs new bearings again on pinion shaft

I cant tell as for the others

Did you put shims etc in all the right places they came from??
